Espy Water Main Break

That boil water advisory issued by United Water for residents along the 26 – hundred block of Old Berwick Road in Espy has been canceled. It was posted early Monday when an 8 inch in diameter line broke... spewing water several feet into the air.... so says the Utility's Bob Manbeck. It has yet to be determined what caused that water main to break Monday morning in Espy.

 

PPL Plant

Operators at PPL's Susquehanna Steam Electric station in Salem Township north of Berwick took the Unit 1 reactor off line over the weekend. The outage is necessary for refueling and maintenance. During the downtime... a utility spokesman says 40 % of the uranium fuel will be replaced... as well as upgrading equipment with state-of-the-art technology. No word how long Unit 1 will be off – line, but Unit 2 continues to chug along at full power.

 

Foundryville Fire

Still no word as to what caused a deadly fire on Foundryville Road... just outside of Berwick. Our media partner... Newswatch 16... is reporting 57 – year old Mike Rupp died in the flames along with three dogs. The fire was discovered by Rupp's wife... Patricia... when she returned home late Friday night. Investigators say the blaze started in the living room area of the mobile home.

 

Block Party

For the most part... weekend block party revelers in Bloomsburg either went back to their dorms... student housing... or returned to where they came from following Saturday's event. Christina of Upper Darby... a BU student... took in her first Block Party telling us that she felt safe. But for Bloomsburg Police Chief Roger Van Loan... it was a tiring day for officers who patrolled the event... and made a lot of arrests. Chief Van Loan says planning begins this week for the 2015 edition of Block Party in Bloomsburg... once reports from police department start streaming in as to what worked and what didn't.

 

Rt 11 Construction

A major resurfacing project gets underway Monday on Route 11 between Park Street in Bloomsburg and Shaffer Road in Scott Township. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the work involves milling the existing roadway... and repaving. Most of the work will be preformed overnight between 7 PM and 6 AM Monday night's through Friday morning's. The work is expected to be wrapped up by early June.

 

Boston Marathon

The life of a 1988 Bloomsburg University Mass Communication's graduate.... now a trauma surgeon... was changed dramatically a year ago Tuesday as she treated the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Tracey Dechert of Pottsville was off duty at the time... but returned to the Boston Medical Center as the victims began coming through the emergency room door. Dr. Dechert was on campus recently to give a talk about her experiences. Meantime... this year's Boston Marathon will take place a week from today among heightened security.

 

Hanover Township Accident

The intersection of East Main Street in Hanover Township and the San Souci Parkway is open Monday morning following a three car collision Sunday night. Authorities say two people were taken to the hospital following the crash. Three others sustained minor injuries.

 

Luzerne County Deficit

The budget numbers for Luzerne County government are worse than expected. County Council recently getting word that the government is $7.4 - million dollars in the red... figures revealed in an audit. A year ago... unaudited figures showed a $1.1- million dollar deficit. Most of the loss was four million dollars less than expected in general fund revenue... the remainder spending more than anticipated.

 

Spring Scams

Spring has sprung and unscrupulous home improvement contractors are out and about, looking for the next victim. As WHLM's Pete Primak reports many times these transient contractor will show up unannounced, offering to paint homes or pave driveways on the spot, perhaps for a few hundred bucks cash. The problem is, the work is often performed shoddily, using inferior materials or the contractor leaves before finishing the work. The state Attorney General's office says you should check the credentials of any contractor you're thinking about hiring, and get everything in writing.

 

Donate Life

The U S Department of Health and Human Services is trying to raise awareness about the need for organ donation. WHLM's Cathy Clark tells us April is Donate Life Month and Assistant U S Health Secretary Howard Koh says over 120,000 people are on a waiting list for donor organs. He says 18 people die every day on that list. The campaign "Made Possible by Organ Donors" is telling the stories of what recipients of donated organs are doing with the gift of life and health. BU Softball

Playing at home for the first time this season, the Bloomsburg University softball team swept a doublheader from Millersville yesterday.

The Huskies won the opener 10-1 and then took the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings.

 

BU Baseball

The Bloomsburg University baseball team played a doubleheader Sunday against Kutztown. In game one... Bloomsburg defeated Kutztown 7 to 6.... while in the nightcap... BU topped Kutztown 11 to 7.

 

PHL Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies completed a sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon. On Monday night at home the Phils begin a 4 game series with the Atlanta Braves. Monday's game starts at 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

Other Games 

In other games Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost a 4-1 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers who won their 9th straight game. The New York Mets were routed by the Los Angeles Angels 14-2, and Sunday night it was the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox 3 – 2.

 

The Masters

For the second time in three years, Bubba Watson is the winner of the Masters Golf tournament. On Sunday... Watson became the 17th multiple winner in the history of the event.
