Block Party

The town of Bloomsburg is getting ready for block party. The weather looks nice for the annual event. Police say they will be ready. Law enforcement does not want to see a repeat of last year when an armored vehicle had to be brought in to control a crowd on Fetterman Avenue. Several years ago the town started to issue permits to people who planned a large party. Large parties are defined as 150 or more. Two permits have been issued for this year.

Corbett Trailing in Polls

Governor Tom Corbett is behind in just about every poll when matched with every democrat who has announced their candidacy. The governor will try to turn that around with a state healthcare reform proposal instead of having Pennsylvania join the expanded federal Medicaid exchange. Corbett said he wants to reform all Medicaid. Under the plan, both for-profit and nonprofit funding would be involved. There would be more options for coverage and individuals would be more invested and involved in their healthcare plans.

Burn Ban

Montour County has issued a ban on outdoor burning. That means you can't burn trash or yard debris. A violation of the ban can carry a 100 dollar fine for the first offense, 200 dollars for the second offense and three hundred dollars for the third offense. The ban will be in place for 30 days.

Olympian

Jayson Terdiman of Berwick, who along with his partner finished 11th in the men's luge doubles in Sochi, will be signing autographs and displaying his sled on Saturday from 9am until 2pm at Bear, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep in Berwick. Terdiman was on the WHLM Morning Buzz and told us they make their own sleds at their training facility in Lake Placid, New York.

Child Abuse Bill

Proposals approved by the House and Senate define mandated reporters of child abuse in Pennsylvania and that reports be made to law enforcement or the Department of Public Welfare, going beyond institutional practice. Child advocates wanted to make sure that future reports aren't made just within the institution involved, based on lessons learned from the Jerry Sandusky child molestation case. Senator Kim Ward of Westmoreland County sponsored the bill. The bill defines professions such as the health-related fields, clergy and schools, as required to report suspected abuse.

Deer Disease

A contagious and lethal disease for whitetailed deer, has turned up in Pennsylvania for the seventh time. The case of Chronic Wasting Disease has been found in captive deer, this time in Jefferson County. The farm in Reynoldsville and the deer's birthplace in Northampton County have been quarantined. Spokesperson Samantha Krepps of the Department of Agriculture says the agency was monitoring for CWD before it first found in PA in 2012.

E Cigarette Ban

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has signed legislation that bans the sale of e-cigarettes to minors immediately...and institutes a ban on their use by anyone in public places starting this summer. The proposals were passed by City Council unanimously and Nutter says it's best to treat this new product carefully. The public ban takes effect on July 1st.

Slow Down in Montour Township

The Montour Township police department is the process of looking for aggressive drivers. It is part of a special aggressive driving funding project. Police will target Montour Blvd., Rupert Drive, Mall Blvd., and Valley Road. Cops will be out at all times but especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon commutes. The increased enforcement will run through May 4th.

Judge Unseals Records

The state attorney general continues to make her case for dropping an undercover investigation of elected officials that started before she took office. The newest arguments come from documents just unsealed by a judge. Attorney General Kathleen Kane says the newly opened court records confirm her office made the proper decision regarding the criminal investigation involving a confidential informant. She also released a written statement from Senior Counsel Bruce Beemer detailing why he recommended charges not be brought against the Philadelphia lawmakers and judge who allegedly accepted money or gifts. The documents indicate her office tried to nullify the agreement dropping charges against the informant. Kane suggests if the case is so great, the Philadelphia District Attorney's office can take it.
