Dockside Fire

The sound of the fire siren punctuated the call of Wednesday night bingo at the Bloomsburg Fire Department shortly before 7:30. Firemen rushing to the 200 block of Iron Street to douse a dryer fire at the Dockside Laundromat. Chief Bob Rupp said it clothing in a dryer caught fire with some of the flaming material ending up on the floor. Deputy Chief Hugh Gross dousing the fire with an extinguisher. Firemen with air packs entered the first floor of the two story building and simply pulled the rest of the burning clothing out of the building where the flames were doused.

 

Frank Brogan

He's making a tour of university campus' these days... and Frank Brogan... the Chancellor of the State System of Higher Education... likes what he sees. Chancellor Brogan was on the Bloomsburg University campus Wednesday... chatting with students and educators in a classroom – type setting. In an interview with WHLM News... Chancellor Brogan says he's excited about the state education system. Brogan started his job only six weeks ago... coming from a similar position with the State of Florida. Thus far... he's visited 12 of the 14 state universities in Pennsylvania.

 

United Water Work

United Water crews braved freezing temperatures overnight to replace a 300 pound valve that caps the end of a 6 inch in diameter water line at Main and Iron Streets in Bloomsburg. They tried to preform the same job earlier this week but ran into some issues. With some water being shut off while we slept... the utility's Bob Manbeck says if you have discolored water... simply run the cold water tap and it should clear. One upgrade crews preformed is bring the valve closer to curbside so future maintenance can be preformed quicker and easier.

 

Bloomsburg Robbery

Bloomsburg Police are keeping an eye out for a man who took drugs and money at gunpoint around 7:30 Wednesday night. Police say the man entered an apartment at 465 E. 8th Street... pulled a weapon... and threatened the unnamed resident. The apartment dweller complied and the suspect made off with a bottle of medication and $400 in cash. Police now looking for a white male... six feet tall with a stocky build... with a black knit hat and scarf... wearing clothing with the Carhart logo. Have information call Bloomsburg Police.

 

Elderly Couple Injured

An elderly Almedia couple are recovering from injuries received in a two vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in the 34 – hundred block of Old Berwick Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition Harold Snyder and his wife, Jane... had just left their home when their van collided with a parked Post Office truck. The impact flipping the van on it's side with the couple ended up on one another on the driver's side door. Postal truck driver... 55 – year old Paul Peritz was slightly injured in the crash.

 

Residents Evacuated

An estimated 40 residents of the Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hazle Township were evacuated from their building Wednesday afternoon. That's when firefighters were called after smoke was discovered inside the building. Authorities say a heater problem produced the smoke in a stairwell and part of a building.

 

Notebook Computer

Someone in the Hazleton area is missing a notebook computer. State Police at Hazleton tell us the Hewlett Packard notebook was found in the parking lot of the Turkey Hill Store in Hazle Township. If you believe the computer is yours... contact State Police in Hazleton.

 

Wilkes – Barre Church Targeted

A Wilkes – Barre church is the target of vandals... just hours after a crime watch meeting. The incident happened earlier this week at the Wyoming Valley Presbyterian when thieves ripped off copper gutters... nearly a century old. The thieves didn't get all they wanted since heating elements used to deter an ice build up are attached to the gutters.

 

State College Death

Police believe a synthetic drug being marketed as LSD, or acid, led to the death of a 20-year-old Penn State student who fell from a downtown apartment balcony last weekend. Investigators said use of the psychedelic drug appears to have resulted in the accidental death of Conor MacMannis of Virginia... and overdoses for several others who were with him.

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played Millersville Wednesday night in their PSAC East openers. The Lady Huskies dropping their game by a score of 80 to 74. In the nightcap, the men's team won 83 to 77. Both Bloomsburg University basketball teams will play at Lock Haven Saturday afternoon starting with the women's game at 1 o'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.

 

High School Football

The unbeaten Berwick High School football team plays Bethlehem Catholic Friday night in a Class AAA first round state playoff game in Allentown. It will be the first meeting of the schools since 1993. Friday night's game kicks off at 7 O'clock. Coverage on Classic Rock 103.5 begins with The Coach Curry Show at 6.

In the NBA Wednesday night... the Toronto Raptors rolled over the Philadelphia 76er's 108 to 98.

Thursday night in the NFL, the New Orleans Saints play the Falcons in Atlanta.
