Bloomsburg PD Grant

The Bloomsburg Police Department is getting a 2 – year, $40,000 grant from the PA Liquor Control Board. It's aimed at reducing underage and high risk drinking. Interim Bloomsburg Police Chief Roger Van Loan says there alcohol is a problem in Bloomsburg. It usually shows up after 11 PM on weekend nights. Van Loan says BPD will earmark the money to increase officer presence at various times in areas such as Lightstreet Road... East and Iron Streets.


Sheriff / Wanted

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office usually gets the man... or woman... they're looking for. Now... deputy's are set up in the Education Building at the Bloomsburg Fair... with a unique way to find folks who have slipped the long arm of the law. Sheriff Tim Chamberlain has mug shots of those wanted. Many are sought for being deadbeat parents... or skipping court dates. Sheriff Chamberlain says deputies are getting plenty of tips... and working each one of them. As a matter of fact... several individuals wanted surrendered on their own Wednesday morning.


Bloomsburg Fair Attendance

Are those attendance numbers from the Bloomsburg Fair published in the Press – Enterprise accurate?? You bet they are.... says Jeff Turner... the Superintendent of Ticket Collectors. For example... 39,300 visitors went through the turnstiles Wednesday. About seven years ago... the fair board approved the installation of a bar code system in order to keep an accurate head count. Turner says the attendance figures are spot on.... and are somewhat lower than when ticket takers were using manual means of counting visitors.


Rep. Culver

State Representative Linda Culver... who takes care of Northumberland and Snyder County's in Harrisburg... is meeting and greeting people Thursday afternoon in Snydertown. It will take place at the Borough building on South Main Street starting at 3 O'clock. And on Friday... Representative Culver holds a legislative breakfast to talk about the issues. Then... on October 10th... its a Fall Senior Forum at the Nottingham Village Retirement Center in Northumberland.


DeAndrea Crash

Hazleton Police Chief Frank DeAndrea is probably a bit sore Thursday after his unmarked department – issued SUV after he collided with pick up truck... then into a sign post. The incident happened on North Cedar Street while responding to a call. Chief DeAndrea was shaken up and taken to Hazleton General to be checked out. His SUV sustained major damage.


Health Exchange

Starting October 1st, enrollment will be open for people who want to buy health care coverage through the federal run exchanges. The exchanges will offer different plans and different levels of coverage. That will mean different premiums and out-of-pocket expenses such as co - pays and deductibles. But Antoinette Kraus of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network says the information will be set up to help people compare plans in an easy to use fashion. She encourages people to really think about their health care usage when picking a plan.


Tobacco Tax

A proposal in President Obama's fiscal 2014 budget could help expand pre school education and help reduce smoking according to an analysis by tobacco opponents. President Obama is proposing a 94 cent increase in the federal tax on cigarettes and similar increases on other tobacco products. It's estimated that PA's share could provide access to quality pre schools for ten thousand children in the first year alone. Supporters add it will also stop over 80,000 Pennsylvania kids from starting to smoke in the first place.



Two men and a woman were taken into custody Wednesday in the Heights section of Hazleton. The woman was eventually released... but a man was placed in the back of a squad car... suspected of vehicle thefts and break – in's. A second man who was recording the take down with a camera was also hustled off to police headquarters when he failed to listen to police requests to step back.


Luzerne County Bust

Two Luzerne County residents are in jail... facing felony heroine distribution charges. Police say 34 – year old Dontrell Ferguson and 23 – year old Keri Longenberger of Rutter Street in Hanover Township are accused of having thousands of dollars in drugs. Both are facing a long list of charges.


Voting Deadline

October 7th is the deadline for Pennsylvanians to register to vote in the November 5th election. This week... voter advocates sent the reminder that voting sends a message to politicians even in off-year elections. Susan Carty, president of the PA League of Women Voters, said 25% of eligible to vote, are still not registered and only 65% who are registered, go to the polls only for major elections.

Central / Danville

Central Columbia at Danville is Friday night's high school football game of the week here on the WHLM Stations. Central coach Jason Hippensteel, whose team is 2-2, knows what the Bluejays must do to knock off unbeaten Danville. Meantime... former Bloomsburg University football coach Danny Hale will be the special guest on the Countdown to Kickoff Show Thursday afternoon at 5:15 on the WHLM Stations.


Henry Hynoski

Henry Hynoski was placed on the season ending injured reserved list by the New York Giants this week. Hynoski, in his third season as the team's starting fullback, suffered a fractured shoulder in Sunday's game at Carolina.


NFL Thursday

In the NFL Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers play the Rams in Saint Louis...


PHL Phillies

In the final game of their series in Miami Wednesday night... the Miami Marlins just getting by the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 2. Thursday night, the Phils open a series in Atlanta against the Braves. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35.


In other games Wednesday... the Pittsburgh Pirates losing to the Chicago Cubs 4-2... the New York Mets defeating the Cincinnati Reds 1-0... and the Tampa Bay Rays downing the New York Yankees 8 to 3.
