Bloomsburg Fair

If you tried to stroll the streets and avenues of the Bloomsburg Fair Sunday... it was a tough thing to do. Fair officials say an estimated 68.000 paying customers came through the turnstiles. Boots Hetherington of Schuylkill County was there. He's Governor Corbett's liaison to all 109 fairs across the state and he was in town since the state contributes... financially... to the exhibition. Meantime... the Governor is expected to be on the Fairgrounds Tuesday.. with the state house Agriculture and Tourism committee members stopping by for a visit later this week.


Fair App

If you're headed to the 158th edition of the Bloomsburg Fair this week.... and you have a smart phone... a couple of students at the University have produced a Fair app... so you won't get lost. BU Communication Studies professor Jim Tomlinson tells us anon – campus survey turned up a lot of the information they placed in the app. You can download the app from the iTune store. And if that doesn't work... stop by the WHLM information booth in front of the security building for up to the minute information.


Legislature / Millard

The State Legislature will be brought back into session Monday after spending two - and – a – half - months taking care of constituent concerns. Republican State Representative David Millard of Berwick says a transportation bill and the resolution of the state pension system woes is top of mind the first few weeks of the new session. But, Representative Millard said one issue not gaining traction is a proposal to take the state liquor stores private. That... he said... is for another day.


Education Demonstration
Education advocates are in Harrisburg, urging legislators to make funding a priority of the new legislative session. Making what they say is a public call for a thorough and efficient system of education, parents, teachers and other advocates are in Harrisburg to highlight the plight of schools in the wake of funding cuts. They are at the Capitol, urging legislators to make their constitutional responsibility their first priority of the fall legislative session.


State Job Stats

The PA Department of Labor and Industry says private and public sector jobs were on the increase during August. Pennsylvania’s August total jobs were at their highest level since October 2008, increasing by 11,300 to a total of 5.7 – million. Both private and public sector jobs were up with increases in eight of the 11 categories in which jobs are classified. However, the state's unemployment rate was up two – tenths of a percentage point to 7.7% in August.


Hazleton Fire

A fire investigator is trying to figure out how a blaze began in a vacant Hazleton home on Sunday. Hazleton's fire chief say there was no utilities going into the Grant Street home. Now... city's fire chief says he believes Sunday afternoon's fire is the work of an arsonist.


Delorean Fire

It was literally “back to the future” over the weekend in Hazle Township... when firemen were called to extinguish a fire in a 80's model Delorean. Daryl Given telling firefighters... he was southbound on I-81 when he began experiencing mechanical difficulties... with the blaze erupting in the rear engine compartment. Authorities say the Delorean was extensively damaged.


Alleged Kidnapping

Wilkes – Barre Police looking for three women who allegedly kidnapped a fourth woman Saturday night from a bar. Aleiya Hill of Kingston telling police three women pushed her into a car as she left a South Main Street bar... assaulted her... then forced Hill to pay for gas... then dumped her in Wilkes – Barre Township. Police are looking into the situation.


Wilkes – Barre Drug Busts

A drug bust in Wilkes – Barre at the start of the weekend. Wilkes – Barre and State Police arresting six people at several locations. Many of those arrested charged with dealing heroin. All are lock up in the Luzerne County prison system.

BU Football

Bloomsburg University defensive end Larry Webster is the PSAC defensive player of the week. Webster had a career high four sacks in the Huskies 31-12 win Saturday afternoon at Kutztown. The win improved the Huskies record to 3-0. Saturday at 3:30, Bloomsburg meets Lock Haven at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium. Lock Haven is 2-1.



In the NFL Sunday night.... the Chicago Bears got the best of the Pittsburgh Steelers 40 – 23.


Sunday in the NFL... the New York Jets defeated the Buffalo Bills 27-20... and the San Francisco Giants remaining winless with a 38-0 loss at Carolina.


PHL Phillies

In baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies removed the interim tag from Ryan Sandberg naming him to a three year contract as their manager. The Phils losing their final home game of the season yesterday to the Mets 4-3. Monday night the Phils begin a series in Miami. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins at 6:35 with the pregame show.


In other games Sunday... the Pittsburgh Pirates losing to the Cincinnati Reds 11-3... and the New York Yankees losing to the San Francisco Giants 2-1.
