Millville's Top Cop

Millville Police Chief Ted Stout is being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police after his girlfriend filed a protection of abuse order against him. Thus far no charges have been filed against Stout... but he has been placed on paid administrative desk duty. Court papers show girlfriend Tori Harrison lived with Stout and says she has been the target of the Chief's alleged abuse. Harrison is a Millville police officer and also works part time for Madison Township. A hearing on the P-F-A is scheduled for next Wednesday in Columbia County Court in Bloomsburg... and until the situation is resolved... one officer is taking care of patrol duties in Millville.

 

Coach Death

The head varsity girls basketball coach at the Southern Columbia Area school district is dead. Published report says Kevin Collins died Tuesday after being stung by a bee on his foot at his Coal Township home... while getting golf clubs out of his car. Collins had just wrapped up his first season as girls head basketball coach during the 2012 – 13 school year. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

 

Orangeville Carnival

Like clockwork.... residents of Orangeville lined the streets last night to take in the annual Fire Company Pet and Toy parade. It's an event that takes place every year... and is held in conjunction with the Orangeville Fire Company carnival. One of the judges was Columbia County Commission chairman Chris Young.  Young says parades of this type are a part of Americana. The annual Orangeville Fire Company Carnival runs through Saturday night.

 

Bloomsburg Water Main

It took crews from United Water an estimated 5 1/2 hours to open Main Street of Bloomsburg... near Iron Street... and replace a valve on an eight inch in diameter water main... buried underground. That led to some pre – dawn heavy equipment noise... and the lack of water. But for United Water's Bob Manbeck... it was nothing more the preventative maintenance. Now... crews will go through the same process early Thursday morning as they open another section of the street to replace a second valve. Apartment dwellers from Iron to Market Street... along Main could be faced without water service for a couple of hours.

 

Berwick Auction

If you always wanted a piece of Berwick's LaSalle Street history... you'll have an opportunity to do so late this afternoon. There will be an auction at the former Hayes Hotel at 539 LaSalle Street. According to D. Owen Groves Auctions web site.... kitchen equipment... booths... and assorted memorabilia will be on the block. The hotel will soon be leveled by a demolition crew to make way for a new project. The auction begins Wednesday afternoon at the site in the 500 block of LaSalle Street.

 

Cancer Research

The Geisinger Medical Center is just one of several hospitals around the state recently given money to continue medical research. In GMC's case... it's to study brain cancer with the help of $110,000 provided by the state. Pennsylvania State Health Secretary, Michael Wolf, says Geisinger is a leader in cancer research. They money for Geisinger research coming from the Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement Program.

 

Coal Twp. Fire

A state fire marshal will be at an apartment building Wednesday in the 1400 block of West Arch Street in Coal Township. The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. The lone tenant. 35 – year old Billie Jo Elliott... had not paid rent for some time... and was in the process of moving after being evicted. Fire officials say the blaze broke out near a bathroom window of Elliott's apartment.

 

Electricity Stolen

A Mountain Top man has been charged with stealing electricity from Pennsylvania Power and Light. 45 – year old Freddy Reyes of Coplay Place in Wright Township is already in the Luzerne County Jail on a million dollars bail after being charged as an associate of a Wilkes – Barre drug trafficking organization. A wire circumventing his PPL meter was found during the course of the investigation.

PHL Phils

In the first game of a three game series in Saint Louis last night... the Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 1. The second game of that series will be tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 8:15. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 7:40.

 

Other Games

The New York Mets downed the Atlanta Braves 4 to 1.... it was the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Washington Nationals 5 to 1.... and the New York Yankees just getting by the Texas Rangers 5 to 4.

 

NASCAR on TV

ESPN's 8 year run of broadcasting NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races will end after the 2014 season. NASCAR announced Tuesday that NBC has signed a ten year deal to televise the final 20 Cup races and the final 19 Nationwide events beginning in 2015.
