Bloomsburg Coach

The Bloomsburg High School district is closer to hiring a new head football coach. Superintendent Cos Curry confirming to WHLM News a job offer has been extended to 37 – year old Mike Kogut of the Tri – Valley School District in Schuylkill County. Mr. Kogut has five years of head coaching experience at Tri – Valley, which is similar in size to Bloomsburg. Tri – Valley's website lists Kogut as a teacher for gifted students at the district's Junior / Senior High School in Hegins. Superintendent Curry says Kogut plans to keep his teaching job at Tri – Valley... while commuting to Bloomsburg to coach the Panthers. He faces school board approval at next Tuesday's meeting.

 

Millard / Liquor

Within the next ten days or so... the State Senate is expected to start considering a bill that would take the state store system private. The initial measure was adopted by the state house last week. State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township says state residents pushed the issue... looking for convenience in purchasing their products. However, during a recent interview... State Senator John Gordner of Berwick says the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

 

Natural Gas Expansion

There is proposed new legislation designed to encourage the extension and expansion of natural gas service in the Keystone State. WHLM's Matt Paul is reporting from our Harrisburg News Bureau Pennsylvania is sitting on top of one of the largest natural gas deposits in the world, but some 50% of its residents do not have access to natural gas service. That's why the Natural Gas Consumer Access Act would require natural gas utilities to develop extension and expansion plans, and submit them to the PUC. State Senator Gene Yaw of neighboring Lycoming County wants to give Pennsylvanians the opportunity to use energy from home-grown natural gas. Representative Yaw says natural gas is currently running at about 25% of the cost of home heating oil.

 

Northumberland Co. Crash

One person was taken to the hospital after an SUV and a dump truck collided on Route 61 and Juniper Road near Paxinos... in Northumberland County. Police say the SUV driver drifted across the road... into the path of the truck. The accident shut down a portion of the highway for several hours until the investigation was completed.

 

Kidsburg

The folks who are behind rebuilding Kidsburg at Bloomsburg Town Park have another fundraiser planned for Saturday, April 6th. Co – chair Deb Huckans says Casino Night will take place at the Capital Restaurant in Bloomsburg. As the organization tries to build up their treasury... they're looking for volunteers to help their cause. Tickets are required for the event... which begins at 7 O'clock at the Capitol Saturday, April 6th.

 

Mosquito Money

The state has awarded over $2 - million in grants to 26 counties to help control mosquitoes that can carry West Nile Virus. Neighboring Luzerne County is slated to receive nearly $80,000 for mosquito control. Right now, it's too early to tell how the colder weather this year affected the mosquito population because one type is more resilient. Some counties will start their surveillance programs in April and the rest will begin in May.

 

Man Stunned by Police

A 49 – year old Plymouth man is in the Luzerne County Prison after he was arrested by State Police while he walked along Interstate 81 in Rice Township. 49 – year old Herbert Pyle was found stabbing himself with scissors. As troopers approach... he walked towards them making a stabbing motion. That's when he was zapped twice with a stun gun and subdued.

 

Hanover Twp.

Police in Hanover Township... in Luzerne County... continue their probe into the report of shots fired near the intersection of Luzerne and Division Streets. Several people were seen running from the area... and shell casings were found on the ground. No word yet on what triggered the gunfire.

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team improved their record to 14 and 4 by sweeping a doubleheader from Georgian Court yesterday at Hutchinson Field. The Huskies won the first game 2-0 and the nightcap 10-1. Their next action will be a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at IUP.

 

NCAA / Thursday

In the NCAA basketball tournament last night... Ohio State defeated Arizona 73 – 70... Marquette downed Miami 71 – 61... Syracuse outscored Indiana 61 – 51... and it was Wichita State over La Salle 72 – 58.

 

NCAA / Friday

There are four more games Friday night including Florida Gulf Coast taking on Florida. Florida Gulf Coast is the biggest surprise of the tournament- the first 15 seed to make it this far. The team has a connection to Bloomsburg. Their school's President, Wilson Bradshaw, was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Bloomsburg University from 1995 to 2000.

In the NHL Thursday night... the New York Islanders just getting by the Philadelphia Flyers 4 – 3.
