Blood Drive

The Bloomsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross continue their series of blood drives across Columbia and Montour Counties. The Chapter's Sue Norton says a very important blood drive is set for Tuesday at the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn. A second drive will be held at the mall this Saturday starting at 12 noon. Flood Stories, Too

The flooding of September 2011 has reshaped our lives for those of us who live in Bloomsburg. And now the Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble will present the words of those who went through those dark days in a production called Flood Stories, Too. It debuts Thursday night and runs through the next two weekends. The BTE's Syreeta Combs Cannaday we'll discover the relationship between Bloomsburg University and the town.... and how university students helped in many ways to bring the town back to pre – flood conditions. Performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings the next two weekends start at 7:30.... with a 2 PM Saturday afternoon matinee.... and one on Sunday at 3 O'clock. It all takes place at the Alvina Krause Theater on Center Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Senate Education

State Education Secretary Ron Tomalis spent Monday on the hot seat talking about education funding. During testimony in front of the Senate appropriations committee... Tomalis defended a proposal dealing with block grants for education. More hearings are scheduled for Tuesday.

 

Animal Cruelty

A Hazleton man is the focus of an animal cruelty investigation. Authorities say 53 – year old Gino Saullo, Senior was walking the mixed – breed pit bull in the 1300 block of Harwood Road in Hazle Township over the weekend. That's when the dog jumped into a yard. Saullo allegedly pulled up on the leash until it died.... leaving the body alongside the road. They found Saullo through a Luzerne County dog license.

 

Sentence

A Mahanoy City man will spend up to the next seven years in prison after being pleading guilty last month to a charge of homicide by vehicle while under the influence. 40 – year old Edward O'Boyle received the sentenced in Schuylkill County Court on Monday. O'Boyle admitting he was drunk when his car struck and killed motorcyclist Jeff Donnelly of Barnesville. Donnelly was a teacher at the Mahanoy Area High School.

 

Metal Detectors

Hazleton elementary and middle schools may soon see permanently installed metal detectors at those buildings. Now... the district's school board is evaluating the purchase of the units and their on – going maintenance. Already... there are four metal detectors at the main campus where kids must pass through before entering the building.

 

Gas Prices

Averages gas prices across Northeastern Pennsylvania are slowly coming down. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve unleaded regular averaging $3.75 a gallon. More at some locations... less expensive at others. That's down two cents from the weekend... and five cents from a week ago. 30 – days ago... we were paying $3.65 a gallon.

 

Montour County Fire

A close call for the owners of Seibel Construction in Limestone Township in Montour County on Sunday. A malfunctioning wood stove caused insulation and some ceiling tile to smolder in the garage area at the building at 49 Strict Road. Firemen were called and they squelched whatever flames they found. Damage was minor.

PSAC Playoffs

There will be PSAC playoff basketball Tuesday night at the Nelson Field House as the Bloomsburg University women's team takes on Kutztown in a conference quarterfinal. The Huskies are 21 and 5 this season and beat Kutztown twice in the regular season. If Bloomsburg wins, they will host the PSAC final four this Friday and Saturday. Tuesday night's game tips off at 7 O'clock. Catch all the action on the WHLM Stations starting with the pregame show at 6:40. In the other quarterfinal games tonight, Millersville is at Shippensburg, California at Gannon, and IUP at Edinboro.

 

Women's College Basketball

In women's college basketball Monday night, in the regular season finale for both teams, second ranked Notre Dame beat third ranked Connecticut 96-87 in three overtimes.

 

Men's College Basketball

In men's basketball, Gonzaga is ranked first in the nation for the first time in school history. The Zags have a season's record of 29 and 2.
