Rent Inspections

It's been a week since Bloomsburg Town Council okayed an ordinance calling for the inspection of non - student and home rentals. An unpopular move among landlords who have rental property.... and the topic of water cooler talk and newspaper columns the past week. But Bloomsburg Mayor Dan Knorr says the inspection program will work... and has less regulation than one first proposed a couple of years ago. The inspection program takes effect October 1st... and is designed to make non – student and home rental properties safer through a once – over by code enforcement. However, it will cost landlords... who are expected to pass that expense on to their tenants through higher rents.


State Budget

State lawmakers on the House and Senate Appropriations committees have wrapped up two weeks of hearings with state department heads as they try and settle on a 2013 – 2014 proposed state budget. And although Governor Corbett has proposed a 28.4 - billion dollar spending plan... state house appropriations chairman Bill Adolph says the final budget will look a lot different. The proposal must be on Governor Corbett's desk by the end of June. Representative Adolph making his remarks during a recent appearance on the WHLM Morning Buzz.


Rate Shock

Next year could prove to be a tumultuous time for health insurance rates. State Insurance commissioner Michael Consendine told a state budget panel young, healthy American's will experience... what he calls “rate shock” with the implementation of the federal Affordable Care Act.... or as some people know it.... “Obama Care.” Consedine says the question is weather young people will participate.... or opt to take the penalty instead.


Berwick Teachers

Berwick Area School District teachers have given their okay for a new three – year contract. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition... teachers will be getting an estimated 3% raise each year of the contract with an average salary of $64,000 annually the final year of the pact. In return... the 234 teachers have said it's all right to cap health insurance costs. Berwick Superintendent Wayne Brookhart says the district can now control costs.... while teachers get the security they're looking for over the next three years.


Williams Funeral

Hundreds of corrections officers were at funeral services held over the weekend in Nanticoke for 34 – year old Eric Williams. He's the federal corrections officer who was beaten and stabbed while he made his rounds last week at the US Penitentiary at Waymart. Also on hand was U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder who read a letter from President Obama. The prison system has yet to say who allegedly killed Williams or the status of the investigation.


Hazleton Cameras

It appears Hazleton Police Chief Frank DeAndrea would like to upgrade the city's camera system giving cops 24 hour monitoring and recording capabilities. The current system... says DeAndrea... relies on motion sensing... which failed to pick up a few crimes in the process. Three years ago... Hazleton area business bought into the program... but there are times the cameras don't work. DeAndrea would like to see a system that is stable and secure.


Shenandoah Shooting

Two people are in custody after an early Sunday morning drive - by shooting outside a Shenandoah bar. Authorities say Vanessa Najunas of Shenandoah and Jose Arroyo of Reading were picked – up moments after the shooting outside the Oyster Bar on South Main Street. An officer caught up with the pair... finding a handgun in the glove compartment. No one was hurt in the early Sunday morning shooting in Shenandoah.


Cyclorama Building

We've all been there when we visited the Gettysburg National Military Park... but now it's being demolished. The Cyclorama building used to house the 377-foot painting depicting a pivotal moment in the Civil War battle. The building was constructed in 1962... and back in 2008... the painting of Pickett's Charge has been moved to a new visitor's center.


WHLM Sports


High School Wrestling

Ten area high school wrestlers advanced to the state championships with their performances in the Class AA Northeast Regional which concluded Saturday in Williamsport. Four of those wrestlers won gold medals including three from Benton- Matt Welliver at 120 pounds, Zain Retherford at 138 and Colt Cotten at 145. That trio helped the Tigers finish first in the team standings. Our area's other gold medal winner was Kent Lane of Southern Columbia who finished first at 126 pounds. The state championships begin Thursday morning in Hershey.


Girls HS Basketball

Two area girls high school basketball teams lost in District 4 championship games on Saturday, but both will be be playing first round state playoff games this weekend. On Friday at 6 O'clock, Southern Columbia will play Notre Dame of Green Pond at Catasaqua High School. On Saturday night at 7 O'clock, Danville will play Honesdale at Marywood University in Dunmore.


BU Women's Basketball

The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team plays Kutztown Tuesday night at Nelson Field House in a PSAC quarterfinal. If the Huskies win, they will host the conference's final four this Friday and Saturday. Tuesday night's game begins at 7 O'clock. You can catch all the action on the WHLM Stations starting with the pregame show at 6:40.



In the NBA Sunday night... the Washington Wizards defeated the Philadelphia 76er's 90 to 87.



Carl Edwards wins Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Subway Fresh 500 at Phoenix.
