Millard / Corbett Budget

Governor Corbett taking the wraps off a budget for fiscal year 2013 – 14 on Tuesday. Mr. Corbett is calling for $28.4 - billion in expenditures... an increase of 2.4% over the current budget... with a revenue growth of just 1.5%. State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township says the figure was arrived at by looking at revenue figures that came in during December. Rep. Millard went on to say... year to date... general fund collections of $14.5 – billion exceeded the estimate overall in this fiscal year by $153 – million. And if that's not enough to cover expenditures... Mr. Corbett says he'll toss in another $500 – million from reserves.


Corbett in Wilkes - Barre

A day after delivering his budget speech to lawmakers in Harrisburg... Governor Corbett is on the road Wednesday. He'll be making a stop at the Osterhout Free Library on South Franklin Street in Wilkes – Barre. During his visit... the governor will talk about the additional $8.5 – million proposed for the state Children's Health Insurance Program... also known as CHIP. The program is entering it's 20th year of providing health care coverage to eligible uninsured children and teens in Pennsylvania up to the age of 19.


Obama Care

It's going to get tougher in the next year on businesses and individuals when Obama Care kicks in... requiring all of us to have health insurance... either through an individual policy or through our employer. Appearing on the Tuesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... tax consultant Kim Schooley says an additional 40,000 IRS workers will enforce the new rules and regulations. The result if you don't have health insurance... a hefty fine handed out by the federal government.


Gloria Cohen – Dion

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning in the Philadelphia area for Bloomsburg University Political Science professor Gloria Cohen – Dion. She collapsed in her classroom Monday night... was rushed to the hospital... where she died. BU Dean, James Brown, telling us that Cohen – Dion was well known and liked across the University campus. The University will now bring in counselors to talk with students and staff. Professor Cohen – Dion was a fixture on the BU campus for the past twenty years.


Transportation Study

Montour and Northumberland Counties will take part in a PennDOT study dealing with options involving public transportation. An agency spokesperson says the two counties will look at consolidation and cooperation opportunities. The study is expected to take a year to complete. Still trying to make a decision as to weather or not be included in the study is Union and Snyder Counties.


Sex Assault

A Sunbury man remains in the Northumberland County Jail is now accused of allegedly sexually assaulting a 14 – year old teenage girl he was caring for. 38 – year old Andrew Moore was already behind bars for trying to intimidating witnesses when he appeared before a district Judge this week. Moore is alleged to have relations with the teen dating back to last summer.


Lawsuit Settled

A West Hazleton family has won a court settlement of $75,000 for a lawsuit they filed against state, local and federal law enforcement agencies for a raid that took place in 2007. The Taveras family filed the lawsuit after the Luzerne County Drug Enforcement Task Force raided the family's West Monroe Street home... searching the property for several hours. The Community Justice Project getting involved... and on Tuesday... four family members received an $8,000 settlement from the state attorney general's office. The remainder going to the non – profit Justice Project.


Sno Mountain

Sno Mountain at Montage Mountain may soon have a new owner. The ski area has been operating at a loss for year... and last fall filed for bankruptcy. Several potential buyers have looked at the property. Now... representatives from Camelback Mountain Resort plan to tour the facility... in an effort to get a value on the property if it decides to place a bid on the complex.


Powerball Tix

There is a person walking around Lycoming County with a winning lottery ticket. Someone has a ticket worth a million dollars from last Wednesday's Powerball drawing. The ticket was sold at the Turkey Hill store on Route 87 in Montoursville. It contained the numbers on the white balls drawn... but not the red Powerball number. That person has yet to come forward to claim their prize.

BU Basketball

Back on December 8th, the Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams both lost at Millersville. Wednesday night the Huskies faced them again at the Nelson Field House. The Women led at the half but lost 64-62. The Men came back from being down at the half and through three overtime periods to take a 100-94 win. You can hear the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:



Girls HS Basketball

In girls high school basketball Tuesday night... South Williamsport defeated Millville 64 – 60... Benton downed Montgomery 53 – 36... It was Bloomsburg over Saint John Neuman 64 – 44... Danville defeated Selinsgrove 60 -39... and Southern Columbia just getting by Montoursville 46 – 42.


Boys HS Basketball

In boys high school basketball Tuesday night... Wyoming Valley West downed Berwick 63 – 51.



Tuesday night in the NHL... the Philadelphia Flyers outscored the Tampa Bay Lightening 2 – 1.
