Governor Corbett is placing the finishing touches on his speech dealing with the 2013 – 2014 state budget. For State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township... we'll hear about taking the lottery private... the selling of liquor stores... changes in Transportation funding and education. Governor Corbett delivers his speech at midday Tuesday at the state capitol.
Many of us are circling March 22nd and 23rd on the calender. That's the weekend of the Bicentennial celebration here in Columbia County. It begins the 22nd with a re-enactment of when Columbia broke away from Northumberland County... but on Saturday... there will be big doin's at the Industrial Arts Building at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds... so say Cathy Lynn of the Columbia – Montour Office of Aging with displays... food and fun. Saturday, the 23rd also features a 5K Run / Walk down Main Street in Bloomsburg... followed by a Bicentennial parade which begins at 2 PM. There will be huge firework's that night at the fairgrounds.
Bloomsburg Fire Scare
Bloomsburg Firemen were called out around 10 O'clock Sunday night when there was an indication of a problem with a clothes dryer in an apartment building at 36 East Main Street. Firemen rushed to the scene... and upon a detailed check... it was determined that a bad indicator tripped an automatic fire alarm. Crews were back in quarters within 30 minutes of the initial alarm.
State Representative Kurt Masser who represents Columbia, Montour and Northumberland Counties in Harrisburg opens a satellite office in Danville Monday. It's located in the Danville Borough building in the 200 block of Mill Street. The office is opened two days a week... Monday and Thursday from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Rep. Masser's full – time office is located on Industrial Road in Elysburg.
Traffic / PennDot
If you use Old Berwick Road... north of Lime Ridge... it could be a slow – go starting Monday... and lasting through Thursday. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says there will be single laning near the Interstate 80 bridge so the contractor working on the 50- million dollar bridge project over the Susquehanna River can preform pile – driving operations on the eastbound river bridge. Also... the same contractor wants to remove steel beams from the old westbound I-80 roadway.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday evening for 52 – year old Gary Deets of Millville who died in a one car accident in Lycoming County at the start of the weekend. Police say Deets died when he lost control of his car along Route 118 near Lairdsville... jumped a guard rail and slammed into a tree. The services to be held at the Bunnell Funeral Home in Millville.
Hazleton city officials are looking at the cost of overtime. It has averaged an estimated 113 – thousand dollars each year... for the past three. Records show that in 2010... the city budgeted $106,000, butthe city spent $196,000. In 2012, employees earned $225,000 in overtime... when only $89,000 was budgeted. Two of the biggest overtime expenditures comes from the police and fire department's where it's difficult to budget extra pay due to the unpredictability of assignments.
An early Sunday morning fire in Ashley... in Luzerne County... destroyed a home... and sent one person out into the chilly air. The flames were discovered around 1 O'clock in the double block home on Wyoming Street. Although a fire marshal is investigating... it's believed the blaze began in the kitchen.
Shenandoah / Fire Arrest
A 28 – year old Shamokin woman is jail... after authorities charged her with setting fire to a Shenandoah home last month. Cheyvonne Martinson is accused of setting a fire at a home in the 400 block of West Centre Street... which spread to five other row homes. An apparent domestic dispute led to the fire. Ms. Martinson is now lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison.
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat Clarion yesterday 21-9 for its 8th straight win. The victory clinched at least a tie for the Eastern Wrestling League title for the Huskies. They can win the school's first outright title with a win over Lock Haven on February 15th. Bloomsburg now has a dual meet record of 14 and 2. The Huskies wrestle Friday night at Rutgers.
The Central Columbia wrestling team is the District 4 Class Double A dual meet champion. The Blue Jays beat Benton 45-24 in Saturday's final. Both Central Columbia and Benton will be competing in the state team tournament which begins Thursday in Hershey.
Boys HS Basketball
In boys high school basketball Monday night, Danville was at Central Columbia. The Ironmen came out on top in that game, 54-26. You can hear all the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM High School Hoops Update:
The Baltimore Ravens built a 28-6 lead early in the third quarter. Baltimore then overcame a 34 minute power outage in the Super Dome and a big San Francisco comeback to defeat the 49ers in last night's Super Bowl 34-31.
