A McAdoo man is in trouble with the law after allegedly fondling three pre – teen girls at an Orange Township campground last fall. 36 – year old Gabriel Leshko is accused of fondling two nine year old girls... as well as a 10 – year old girl over the Labor Day weekend. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday edition Leshko got to know the children while he was being helped by a Bloomsburg area couple. He was taken into custody at the Laurel Mall near Hazleton... arraigned and set to the Columbia County Prison with bond set at 50 – thousand dollars.
Trying to get home last night was a challenge for a lot of drivers in Columbia County Monday night... as snow fell... coating area highways. A number of multiple – car accidents were reported over a two hour period... with fire police closing down River Hill Road at the Bloomsburg Bridge... as well as Numidia Drive on the south side of the county near Southern Columbia High School.
Interstate 80 was not immune to a series of accidents late Monday afternoon thanks to snowy conditions. State Police at Bloomsburg tell us a 19 – year old Sugarloaf woman lost control of her car while westbound on 80 near Buckhorn... sliding in the median... flipping over... crossing into the eastbound lane... striking a pick – up truck. Lauren Williams was injured... and transported to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment. She was ticketed by police.
Millard / Education
State Representative David Millard has been chosen to head up a sub – committee within the appropriations committee to deal with education funding.... as well as that of pensions for educators. Pensions costs continue to hinder the state.... and the Millville Republican says there is a looming pension crisis. Millard went on to say... there is a massive shortfall in the funding for each of those pension plans... something that must be addressed... and is tied into educational dollars.
A 5K run... a huge parade through Bloomsburg... festivities and fireworks at the Fairgrounds. Those are just some of the highlights that will be part of Columbia County's celebration of turning 200 years of age the weekend of March 22nd. Planning meeting have been going on for months... and County Commissioner David Kovach says the celebration is important. The celebration begins with a reenactment of Columbia County's first commission meeting after breaking away from Northumberland County back in 1813.
Week of Prayer
Churches around the world are celebrating a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The event got underway over the weekend... and locally services were held. The Rev. Stephen Engelhardt says it's a reminder to pastors and churches that they are one... so why not act like it. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity dates back to the early years of the 20th century.
Hanover Twp. Wreck
A man remains in critical condition at a Wilkes – Barre Hospital following a single car accident Monday on the Sans Souci Parkway. Hanover Township police has not identified the driver... but was ejected from the vehicle when the car jumped a guardrail. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 says the driver may have been street racing with a second car.
Hazleton Fire Department
Hazleton City Council votes Wednesday on a cooperative fire protection agreement with West Hazleton. Under the proposal... Hazleton and West Hazleton firefighters would be able to render mutual aid to each other during emergencies. It could lead to the formation of a regional fire protection district... but that in – itself appears to be years away.
MAP Grant Money
Some grant money is headed to the area thanks to the state and the Corbett Administration. We've learned the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership has been awarded $35,000 in the form of a Municipal Assistance grant. It's earmarked for Hemlock Township... as well as Shickshinny and is designed to assist with flood mitigation and revitalization planning following the September 2011 flood. The partnership will implement a plan to minimize flooding... and introduce economic revitalization.
Sugarloaf Break In
State Police at Bloomsburg are investigating the break in of a home in Sugarloaf township... in northern Columbia County. A PSP news release says someone broke into the Five Points Road home of Brian Campbell sometime between the first of the year and this past weekend. Police say they have no suspects in custody... and an inventory of the home is still being taken to determine what's missing. If you have information dealing with the burglary... call state police.

In boys high school basketball Monday night... Bloomsburg defeated Southern Columbia 71 – 48... and Meadowbrook Christian downed Benton 55 to 44.

In boys basketball Tuesday night, Berwick will take a three game winning streak into their game at Hazleton Area.
Girls HS Basketball
In girls basketball last night... Danville moved into a tie for first place in the Heartland Conference Division I with a 48 – 34 victory over Shamokin... It was Hazleton Area over Berwick 45 – 39...Columbia Montour Vo – Tech squeaked by Bloomsburg Christian 27 to 25.
In the NBA last night... the San Antonio Spurs tripped up the Philadelphia 76ers 90 to 85.
