Cold Weather

You better bundle up.... we're going to be blasted by cold, Canadian air the next few days... starting Monday. A cold front passing through the area Sunday... dropped temperatures overnight... and there is a second cold front on it's way which will allow thermometer readings to drop to the chilliest of the season. Although Monday's high will be in the lower 30's... the thermometer will have a tough time making it out of the 20's the rest of the week. Overnight temps are heading down to single numbers.

And to make it worse... there will be winds gusting to 28 miles an hour overnight Monday.

 

Flu Bug

The flu has been sweeping Columbia and Montour Country's with a vengeance the past couple of weeks... hitting the elderly and the very young. Hospital emergency rooms being filled with folks suffering from the flu's effect. But... to all of us... those not getting the flu are doctors. Not so... says Dr. Lisa Esolen of the Danville – based Geisinger Health System. Physicians do get sick... but not as much since they get their flu shots yearly... cutting down on the chance of getting ill. Meantime... Dr. Esolen says there is still time to get a flu shot in order to prevent from getting the illness this winter.

 

2nd Amendment Demonstration

As the horns of cars and trucks blared at the corner of Route 11 and 54 in Danville on Saturday... demonstrators took to the corner... showing their support of the right to keep and bear firearms. It was part of a show of support on Nationwide Gun Appreciation Day. Brock Hoyes of Danville organized Saturday's event. The street side demonstration came days after President Obama invoked 23 executive orders dealing with gun control... orders that do not need congressional approval.

 

National Guard / Inauguration

One of the most densely populated city today is four hours south of Columbia County. Washington, D.C. Is where President Obama will be given the oath of office for his second term. PA National Guardsmen will be among the throng so says the guards Sgt. Matt Jones. An estimated 1,300 soldiers and airmen are in the District to assist... joining guard units from 24 other states.

 

MinSec Resident

A 37 – year old man... a resident of the MinSec pre – release facility in Hazleton is still missing. Tyrone Echols left the facility Friday afternoon... heading to a work site in Berwick... failing to return Saturday morning. That forced authorities to issue an arrest warrant. Echols was at the half – way house after being convicted of having drug paraphernalia... and simple assault.

 

Murder Suspect Held

A Hazleton man has been arrested by Wilkes – Barre Police in connection with the murder of a 16 – year old Kearney, New Jersey girl. 41 – year old Cruz Martinez of 14th Street is accused of murdering the girl in the bedroom of her home with a gunshot wound to the head. Martinez is being held on $10 – million bail in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

 

Keystone Job Corps

There are changes coming to the Keystone Job Corps Center in Drums. The student population will be reduced by at least one -third. The reason... federal budget cuts by the U-S Department of Labor cited in a letter to Utah – based Management Training Corporation... who runs Keystone. That means 200 of 600 slots for students will be eliminated. Not known, however, if any of the center's 250 employees will be given their walking papers.

 

Berwick United Way

The Berwick Area United way has gone beyond it's goal set for it's 2012 fund raising drive. Executive Director Ginny Crake says the goal of $400,000 was surpassed by an estimated $37,000. The money raised will be used to help non – profit member agencies make life better for Berwick residents who need a helping hand.

 

I-80 Project

There will be some traffic trouble spots to contend with today on Interstate 80 between the Berwick and Mifflinville interchanges. PennDOT's Rick Mason says... that beginning Monday morning... the westbound left lane will be closed between the two interchanges. The contractor working on the bridge project over the Susquehanna River will remove asphalt waste in the median.

BU Wrestling

The 20th ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts in a 24-9 win over Ohio University Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. The Huskies, who now have a record of 11 and 2, face 16th ranked Edinboro Friday night at the Nelson Field House.

 

BU Football

The Bloomsburg University football team has named its captains for the 2013 season. They are running back Franklyn Quiteh, center Chris Steck, and linebacker Justin Shirk.

 

Boys HS Basketball

In boys high school basketball Monday night, Bloomsburg is at Southern Columbia. You can hear that game on the whlm stations starting with the pregame show at 7:15.

 

NFL Sunday

The Super Bowl opponents are now set. It will be the 49ers against the Ravens. In the NFC Championship game on Sunday... the San Francisco 49ers downed the Atlanta Falcons 28 – 24. In the AFC Final... the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 28 - 13. The Super Bowl will be played in two weeks in New Orleans.
