The PPL Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Salem Township... north of Berwick... is hosting a number of visitors. A three member special inspection team arrived at the plant Monday... checking out the circumstances surrounding last month's unplanned shutdown of Unit 2. The unit was just coming up to power... when it automatically shutdown. An NRC spokesman says inspectors will look at operator performance... and management oversight.
Flu / Elderly
The on – going spread of influenza around the region is putting a crimp in everyday life. At the Columbia – Montour County Senior Centers... attendance is usually off in the winter... but Director Kathy Lynn says more so now that the flu bug has hit. One way to prevent from getting sick... so says Lynn... is to use a lot of hand sanitizer... as well as drinking lots of liquids... such as soups and teas. Meantime, workers at the senior centers are doing their part... by wiping down surfaces with disinfectants in an effort to keep the flu bug from spreading.
Teachers across the state could be evaluated differently than what they are now under a proposal being pushed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It was explained during a roundtable discussion Monday night at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit in Montandon. Central Columbia Superintendent Harry Mathias says the state is suggesting a system based on using more data than what has been done in the past. The remaining part of the evaluation will be based on several components including school level data... student performance on standardized tests... attendance and graduation rates.
Balzano's Gas Leak
A natural gas leak in the 100 block of East Main Street in Bloomsburg Monday afternoon led to some tense moments. Firemen couldn't find anything immediately out of place... until they went to the rear of the building. That's where they discovered a leaking connection. The area where the leak was discovered did have some ventilation... so the smell was intermittent. U-G-I was called and technicians arrived on scene and corrected the problem.
Espy and Lightstreet volunteer firefighters were out overnight. Shortly after two this morning... they were summoned to the 13 – thousand building at the Lions Gate Apartment complex in Scott Township. An automatic fire alarm was tripped... and there were reports of smoke coming from the building... but it turned out to be nothing more than burned food on the stove in an apartment.
If you're heading somewhere this week.... you'll find the price of a gallon of gas lower than it was a week ago. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report out shows that across northeastern Pennsylvania... including Columbia and Montour Counties... pump prices for self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.53 a gallon... down a penny from the weekend... and off two cents from a week ago. That average price could fluctuate depending on the location of the gas station.
Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis has launched a criminal investigation against County Controller Walter Griffith. It all deals with allegedly illegally recording dozens of conversations since 2011. Salavantis alleges Griffith never received permission to record telephone or face – to – face conversations with a number of people... a violation of the state's wiretapping laws. State Attorney General Kathleen Kane will decide if Griffith will be charged.
Denny's vs. SUV
The Denny's Restaurant on Kidder Street in Wilkes – Barre isn't a drive – thru... but one man behind the wheel of an SUV tried to make it so. Four people sitting inside the building were injured Monday Morning... when the SUV came across four lanes of traffic... plowing into the side of the building. The driver.... Alrick St. Michael Taylor of Wilkes – Barre... tried to flee the scene, but was captured. He's facing a host of charges.
Two men wanted in connection with the stick up of a Wendy's fast food restaurant in Wilkes – Barre Township over the weekend have been captured. 22 – year old Aaron Flowers of Sugar Notch and 27 – Kristopher Rasmussen of Melbourne, Florida... were taken into custody near New York City's Times Square. The pair took money, personal effects... and herded the late night crew into a freezer. Police say they'll file the paperwork to have Flower and Rasmussen returned to Luzerne County.
Bloomsburg University point guard Chuck Haigler is the PSAC Eastern Division freshman of the week. Haigler averaged 21.5 points a game in leading the Huskies to back to back wins over Lock Haven and Clarion. Wednesday night the Huskies play Shippensburg at Nelson Field House.

In girls high school basketball Monday night... Berwick defeated Coughlin 34 – 15... Bloomsburg downed Columbia Montour Vo Tech 62 – 23... and: it was Danville over Line Mountain 63 – 35.
Boys High School Basketball
