Farm Show Opens

The 97th Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg opened over the weekend. Governor Tom Corbett signaling the opening of one of the biggest agricultural events in the nation. Thousands of people made their way to the farm show complex to take a look at farm machinery and exhibits in the Main Hall. Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary George Greig says state agri-businessmen do things well. The 97th Farm Show runs through Saturday.

 

Shale Workers Study

Danville's Geisinger Medical Center says their partnering with Guthrie Hospital in Sayre. For the past few months... they've been collecting information for a data base dealing with the treatment of people... and their diseases... in relation to work in the Marcellus Shale fields of north Central Pennsylvania.  Dr. David Carey says this is a long – term study... which could last anywhere from five to fifteen years.

 

Christmas Tree Recycling

One of your last opportunities to get rid of that Christmas tree, which graced you home during the holidays, are Mondays during the remainder of January. Bloomsburg Town crews will collect the trees that are placed at curbside... and take them to the recycling center... where they'll be turned into mulch for springtime use. Recycling center director Charles Fritz says Christmas trees are the perfect product designed for reuse. For the trees to be picked up.... they must be at curbside... stripped of all decorations. If you'd rather get rid of the tree on your own terms... you can bring it to the compost site on Sands Street... just off of Ft. McClure Boulevard.

 

NCAA Lawsuit

Governor Tom Corbett continues to face questions about the timing and political implications of his lawsuit against the NCAA over the sanctions against Penn State. Senator John Yudichak of neighboring Luzerne County questions the impact of the lawsuit on the victims... and the school. Corbett says he wants to get the courts to overturn the sanctions against PSU stemming from the Sandusky child sex scandal.

 

Turnpike Prices

If you use the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike... you're going to have to dig deeper into you pockets. Over the weekend.... tolls increased by 10% for cash customers and 2% for E – Z Pass subscribers. The increases are expected to generate an estimated $25 – million in new revenue for 2013.

 

Drug Bust

A Frackville man is facing a long list of drug – related charges after he was busted over the weekend at a Hazleton area motel. Police say 43 – year old Brett Blankenbiller had a bag full of synthetic drugs... known as Bath Salts... as well as a wad of cash. He was taken into custody and hustled off to the Luzerne County Jail.

 

Hit & Run Probe

Wilkes – Barre authorities are expected to go over a red, Pontiac Grand – Am they seized in Hanover Township over the weekend. The car is believed to have stuck and killed 5 – year old Kevin Miller of Dallas on West North Street...only days before Christmas. Thus far... no charges have been filed against driver Thomas Letteer, Jr... named in a search warrant...or his girlfriend Abigail Tarver.

 

Land Purchase

The Greater Hazleton Health Alliance is growing. The organization has purchased 60 acres of land surrounding the Hazleton Health and Wellness Center on the Airport Beltway. The purchase price... $6 – million. The Health Alliance plans to expand the Center... and place a halt to expansion of non – health related businesses.

 

Storm Hearing

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has scheduled a forum Thursday to examine the state's electric utilities' planning measures in anticipation of Superstorm Sandy in late October. The session will also examine the various utilities' communication with customers and efforts to restore service during and after the storm. According to the commission, more than 1.8 - million Pennsylvania residents lost power over the course of the storm. That includes thousands of PPL subscribers in Columbia and Montour Counties. The forum will be held in the Commonwealth Keystone Building in Harrisburg starting at 1:30.

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team came up with a big win Saturday at Nelson Field House as the Huskies knocked off 20th ranked Maryland 22-15. Bloomsburg is now 8 and 2 in dual meets. The Huskies next action will be this Sunday at the Pitt Duals.

 

NFL Playoffs

In the NFL playoffs Sunday... the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Indianapolis Colts 24-9... and it was the Seattle Seahawks over the Washington Redskins 24-14.

 

College Basketball

In college basketball Sunday, 6th ranked Kansas came from behind to beat Temple 69-62.

 

BCS Championship

In college football tonight in Miami, Notre Dame plays Alabama in the BCS Championship game.
