PA Lotto Management
State lawmakers have called a hearing on the Corbett administration's plan to privatize Pennsylvania Lottery management. The Senate Finance Committee has scheduled the hearing for January 14th, and administration officials say they are happy to answer questions in any format. Meanwhile, Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser says the bid deadline may be extended. Any extensions would probably last two to three weeks.
The State Representatives who serve Columbia County will be sworn into office for another term New Years Day. Representatives David Millard, Kurt Masser, and Karen Boback will be sworn-in on Tuesday at noon on the floor of the House of Representatives. The state house facing many challenges before...such as pension reform and coming up with a 2013-2014 budget.
Small Games Seminar
State Representative Lynda Culver of Northumberland and Snyder Counties will be hosting a small games of chance seminar on Thursday January 10th at 6:00 PM at the Sunbury Social Hall. The seminar is open to the public, and Culver encourages all officers, trustees and committee members who are responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of operating local small games of chance events to attend this seminar. It will be approximately 2 hours in length with a question and answer session to follow. Call Culver's office at 286-5885 to RSVP.
If you're looking for something to do today, why not stop by the Columbia Mall this afternoon and get a look at the Wheelchair Engineer Train Program? It's a volunteer effort headed by Robert Bomboy of Danville. A once-vacant storefront is now the home to the program. The Wheelchair Engineers display is open to everyone, and will be operating this afternoon starting at 3:00 PM at the Sears end of the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn.
YMCA 5K Run/Walk
The streets of Bloomsburg will be crowded tonight thanks to the 11th annual YMCA 5K walk/run. For many it's the perfect way to usher in the new year. The “Y's” Roger Brown says an estimated 400 runners were hosted last year, and this year more are expected. Registration for tonight's event begins at 5:00 PM at the YMCA on 7th Street. The start is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
Playing their first game in 11 days, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team was at Philadelphia University yesterday afternoon. The Huskies came out on top 86-65. Their next game will be Friday night at Gannon University in Erie.
High School Basketball
In boys high school basketball last night, in the championship game of the Southern Columbia Holiday Tournament, Southern Columbia beat North Schuylkill 59-44. In girls basketball today at noon Central Columbia plays Berwick in the championship game of the Judy Knorr tournament in Berwick.
National Football League
The NFL 's regular season ended yesterday. Former Southern Columbia star Henry Hynoski scored his first career touchdown on a one yard pass from Eli Manning to help the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles 42-7. In other games, it was The Pittsburgh Steelers 20 and the Cleveland Browns 10. And the Buffalo Bills 28 and the New York Jets 9.
