Beaver Township Fire
As a State Police fire marshal is trying to figure out what sparked a blaze in a Scotch Valley Drive mobile home.... a 59 – year old Beaver Township man is trying to get his life together. Bill Guise had not been staying at his home for several weeks since a hospital stay... but was called Wednesday morning with someone telling him his house was on fire. Although Mr. Guise lost his home... his two dogs are safe... saved by firemen. The trailer and it's contents were destroyed... and for now... Mr. Guise is staying with family members.
Two people are in custody... charged with robbing an insurance agency at gunpoint Wednesday morning. 38 – year old Clayton Kelley of Monroe Street and 19 – year old Nathan Young of Pine Street were arrested and are facing a long list of charges. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition that the pair allegedly walked into the Kocher Insurance Agency... brandished a handgun... but they left empty handed and fled the area on bicycles. No was was hurt in the stick – up.
Berwick Meth Lab
Meantime the arrest of Kelley led police to an allegedly inactive meth lab at his home in the 400 block of Monroe Street in Berwick. While searching the home for a weapon used in the robbery... police stumbled upon the lab. The Press – Enterprise is reporting Kelley is also facing drug charges... as well as his girlfriend... Amie Traugh.
Mobile Meth Lab Bust
A Berwick woman remains in the Columbia County Prison after she was arrested late Tuesday night on a variety of drug charges in Montour Township. Police Chief Terry Eckart said 40 – year old Christine Morgan was discovered actively cooking meth next to a pond.. in her car... on Dussen Drive. She was arrested... and faces misdemeanor and felony charges. Morgan had a video arraignment Wednesday morning... with District Judge Richard Knecht setting bail at $100,000.
Rush Township Fatal
A Hazleton man is dead following a one car crash on Route 54 in Rush Township on Wednesday. The incident taking place between the Hometown Nursing and Rehab Center and Lake Hauto. Dead is 40 – year old Harry Labenburg the Third. Police say... that for some unknown reason... Labenburg's pick up truck left the road and struck a tree. An autopsy is expected to be preformed.
Sex Charges Alleged
A 46 – year old Wright Township man has been arraigned before a district judge... charged with allegedly sexually abusing two young girls for years. David Zarn of Yorktown Road is facing a long list of charges after the two girls involved... both under 17... went to police. He is a surveillance manager at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.... and has been suspended from his job. Zarn was freed after post $50,000 bail.
Hazleton firemen squelched a blaze in short order at a home in the 5-hundred block of Carson Street Wednesday afternoon. The fire was contained to a bathroom wall at 586 Carson. Chief Donald Leshko says the fire began when heat from a plumbing repair job spread and caught the wall on fire.
More than 100,000 Pennsylvania households booted from Medicaid amid a state effort to purge the program of waste will get a chance to have their medical benefits reinstated. Lawyers have reached a settlement with the Department of Public Welfare to resolve claims that eligible families were improperly purged from the health insurance program for the poor and disabled. Households will be able to submit a one-page form asking for reinstatement. Eligible families will be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket medical expenses they incurred while they were removed from the program.

In the first round of the District 4 Class A girls' soccer playoffs Wednesday.... Millville got by Hughesville 4 to 3... Benton over Sayre 5 to 3... and Southern defeats Muncy 2 to 1.
MLB World Series
In the first game of the World Series last night the San Francisco Giants took the opener as Pablo Sandoval belted three home runs in an 8-3 rout of the visiting Detroit Tigers. Game two is tonight.
In the NFL Thursday night, Tampa Bay plays the Vikings in Minnesota.
