PPL Nuclear Plant
Operators at the PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Salem Township are doing some preventative maintenance work and have shut down the Unit 1 reactor over the weekend in order to inspect turbine blades. A plant spokesman says the inspection will help confirm data that is expected to result in a long – term solution to blade cracking that was first discovered last year. Depending on what they find...will be the determining factor on whether or not shut down Unit 2 for an inspection at a later day. No word on how long the inspection of Unit 1 will take.
PPL / NRC
The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission is bringing the hammer down on PPL... and their operation of their Steam Electric station in Salem Township... north of Berwick. The NRC's Paul Krohn says it about the way the company deals with on – site problems... as well as the quality of the procedures to fix them. Krohn says there is no doubt the 30 – year old plant is safe... but it boils down to paperwork. Meantime... plant management say they're aware of the problems... and continue to undergo a cultural change with workers.
Garrison School Sold
A spirited round of bidding Saturday morning for the former Garrison Elementary School in Shickshinny. The Northwest Area School board closed the school for good back in 2009... and since that time the board wanted it off its inventory... and back on the tax rolls. The eventual winning bid amounting to $51,500 came from Helina Shultz of Columbia County who told reporters plan were to keep it in Shickshinny. The building was opened back in 1936... and served the district well until the current high school was opened in 1957, whatever the case... Northwest Superintendent Ronald Gervera says the district is happy with the selling price. No word what the final use for the school will be.
Work on the new river bridge which spans the Susquehanna will have traffic slowed.. and possibly stopped in the westbound lane of Interstate 80 the next few days. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the contractor will close the westbound right lane between the Mifflinville and Berwick exits during the daylight hours. Mason says the parapet on the old westbound bridge is being removed and there is the possibility of flying debris. The project should be wrapped up Wednesday afternoon.
Luzerne Co. Budget
Luzerne County Manager Robert Lawton has delivered his proposed budget to the County Commission. The proposal calls for a spending plan of an estimated $122 – million in 2013... the same as the 2012 budget. There will be no tax increases... but the proposal calls for the elimination of up to 61 jobs. However, 41 of those job positions are vacant... meaning a net of 21 county workers will be told they're no longer needed. The commission must okay some sort of a budget by the end of the year.
Authorities are investigating the weekend robbery of a CVS drugstore on Centre Street in Freeland. State police say a man walked into the store... handed the cashier a note. What's not being released is if the unarmed man got away with anything. No one was threathened or hurt.
Pennsylvania's unemployment rate for September inched upward ever so slightly... only a tenth of a percent over August... landing at 8.2%. Despite the upward trend... the state's overall labor force was 130,000 above the September 2011 level. A state Labor and Industries spokesperson said the increase was partially due to people who were marginally holding on to jobs... discouraged workers and those re-entering the labor force.
The stage is set for the Bloomsburg University football team's biggest game of the season. On Saturday, the Huskies beat Cheyney 27-13 to remain unbeaten. Shippensburg rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat West Chester 42-24 keeping the Red Raiders unbeaten. This Saturday Bloomsburg plays at Shippensburg with the PSAC East title on the line.
High School Golf
Four area high school golfers will be competing in the state championships which begin this morning at Heritage Hills in York. Representing our area will be Austin Renz and Robbie Seebold of Danville and Derek Duttrey... as well as C.J. Hollister of Central Columbia.
In the NFL Sunday... The New York Giants defeated the Washington Redskins 27 to 23. In overtime, the New England Patriots squeezed by the New York Jets 29 to 26. In the Sunday night game.... the Pittsburgh Steelers are for real as they downed the Cincinnati Bengals 24 to 17.
The San Francisco Giants cruised to a 6 to 1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series last night. Game seven is tonight... and the winner heads to the World Series to take on the Detroit Tigers.
