Berwick Meth Labs

Charges are expected to be filed today against eight people arrested at two suspected meth labs in Berwick. The first lab was discovered in a home in the 500 block of Susquehanna Avenue by probation officers. Later Berwick police were called to investigate a burglary in the 200 block of Summerhill Avenue... eventually ending up at a Dairy Road home in Briar Creek Township where a second suspected drug lab was found. One suspect later allegedly stole a pick – up truck... and was captured at 4th and Mercer Streets in Nescopeck. All are in jail.

 

NRC / PPL

Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were in Luzerne County last night to talk about performance issues facing management at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Salem Township.  The NRC wanted to find out how the utility evaluates on – site problems... as well as the quality of the procedures to fix them... so says the agency's Paul Krohn. PPL's Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Timothy Rausch says corrective actions are underway. But overall... so says the NRC's Krohn... the nuclear plant is safe... and it's just the management issues which keep popping up in on – going assessment reports.

 

Veteran Homelessness

You've seen them on the streets of major metropolitan areas.... veterans who are homeless and don't have anywhere to turn. It's a problem we don't see much of in Columbia or Montour Counties.... but Steve Berg of the National Alliance to End Homelessness... says the Veterans Administration is starting to step up to the plate with services. Berg addressed the issue when he appeared at a conference recently about rural homeless and how it effects Columbia and Montour Counties.

 

Quinnipiac Survey

Put Pennsylvania back in the "too close to call" column according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll on both the presidential and US Senate races. WHLM's Cathy Clark tells us Republican Mitt Romney has closed a double digit deficit down to 4 points. He now trails President Obama 50 to 46% among likely Pennsylvania voters with 7% undecided. The US Senate race is a bit closer. Incumbent Bob Casey's lead over Republican challenger Tom Smith has dwindled to 3% according to the Quinnipiac poll. In early August, Casey held an 18 point lead.

 

Theft

A Hazleton middle school social studies teacher is taking some time off from the classroom after he was charged with theft from the treasury of the Luzerne County Lightning basketball club. Authorities say 36 – year old Christopher Walsh of Dallas allegedly made off with $6,000 from the club's bank account. That forced one of the teams to forfeit a chance to play in a national tournament. Police in Kingston say Walsh allegedly shifted money from the teams account to his checking account. Walsh is free on $25,000 bail.

 

Hazle Twp Fire

A State Police fire marshal will be called in to try and figure out what caused a blaze in Hazle Township. Authorities say the fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon in an office of an apartment complex on Harwood Street... spreading to the second floor. Two people were living in the apartment... and are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.

 

Luzerne Budget

Luzerne County Manager Robert Lawton says he'll unveil his 2013 county budget this Friday. Right now the county is facing a $7 – million gap... and it will give him time to talk to department heads. Under the Lawton plan...41 jobs would be eliminated in order to balance the proposal... and not raise taxes...keeping spending at an estimated $122.6 million dollars...the same as this year.

 

Fire Follow Up

Still no word as to what caused that fire at the Castawayz Restaurant on Route 93... the Orangeville – Berwick highway late Sunday night. Authorities labeled the cause “suspicious in nature” and called in a state police fire marshal to find the origin of the blaze. Thus far... no word as to what triggered that suspicious fire Sunday night at Castawayz.

 

Lycoming Co Robberies

A Williamsport man has been arrested.... and it's believed Jess Kick is responsible for several armed robberies plaguing Lycoming County the past week. Keck is accused of knocking off the a cigarette outlet in Loyalsock Township... a convenience store in Williamsport... as well as a checking cashing facility. He faces a long list of charges... and more could be filed as the investigation wraps up.

 

Curley Contract

Penn State says it will not renew the contract of Athletic Director Tim Curley when it expires in June. He's been on leave since he was charged last year with purgery and failing to report child sex abuse in the Sandusky sex scandal. Curley and retired Vice President Gary Schultz are scheduled to stand trial in January in Harrisburg on purgery and failure to report charges.

 

Fatal Accident

A Washingtonville woman has died of her injuries sustained in a weekend crash. Authorities say 83 – year old Marjorie Heydenreich died at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. The crash took place Sunday... on Route 54... a half mile from County Line Road. The driver of the second car... 58 – year old Elizabeth Doughery of Wyomissing... was not seriously injured.

Berwick Football

A Berwick sophomore is off to a great start in his high school football career. Andrew Force has caught five passes this season- all of them for touchdowns. He is averaging over 53 yards a reception. Andrew Force and the Berwick Bulldogs play at Pittston Area Friday night, a game you can hear on Classic Rock 103.5 starting with The Coach Curry Show at 6 O'clock.

 

HS Golf

Four area high school golfers qualified for the state championships with their performances Tuesday in the regionals at Glen Oaks near Reading. Austin Renz of Danville finished third; Derrick Duttrey of Central Columbia finished tied for fourth; and Danville's Robbie Seebold and Central Columbia's C.J. Hollister also finished in the top 16. The state championships will be held next Monday and Tuesday in York.

 

MLB

In major league baseball last night, in the American League Championship series the Detroit Tigers got by the New York Yankees 2 to 1. Game four is Wednesday night in Detroit. The National League Championship Series continues this afternoon at 4 O'clock... as the San Francisco Giants are in Saint Louis to meet the Cardinals. That series is tied at one game each.
