Fair Sky Ride

It was to have made its debut last year...but a flood put those plans on hold. The Sky Ride looming over the north side of the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds is now ready for guests. State ride inspectors giving the thumbs up to the attraction during a Thursday visit. However, the ride is still controversial... game operators and food vendors saying it will take foot traffic from their stands. Not so says ride provider Rick Reithoffer. As a matter of fact... the ride manufacturer says traffic should increase in front of games of chance on the midway. Reithoffer's company footing the million dollar plus bill for the construction of the attraction... taking riders on a 2,000 foot journey 50 to 60 feet above the fairgrounds. Friday... a preview of the 157th exposition... with the opening day scheduled Saturday.

 

Bloomsburg Budget

Bloomsburg Town Council began budget deliberations this week... which will eventually lead to a 2013 spending plan. The session dealt with possible capital expenditures... a wish list of items that are either needed or nice to have. Under that heading... a camera monitoring system for Town Hall... in order to see who's entering and who's leaving the building. Also... a paint job and wood work repair for Town Hall.

 

Woman Assaulted

A woman remains in the Geisinger Medical Center... and the man who allegedly assaulted her with a weapon is in the Columbia County Prison. Bloomsburg Police say 33 – year old Gary Bowman of Berwick faces a long list of charges after he allegedly struck a woman early Thursday morning with the barrel of a shotgun... leaving her with severe lacerations. The Press – Enterprise identifying the victim as Juanita Gill. The incident happened in a home at West First Street and Murray Avenue. Bail for Bowman is been set at $100,000.

 

Berwick Schools

The Berwick Area School board has given the go – ahead to submit plans to the state for a new elementary school. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Friday's edition... plans call for the school to replace aging structures at Orange and 14th Street. Although no site for the school has been selected. However, it's believed it could end up at the current Orange Street site. The next step... plans must be submitted to the state by the end of the month in order to qualify for matching funds.

 

Killer Sought

Hazleton police are continuing to look for a person of interest in the death of a 34 – year old man. Erick Gwaltney was shot to death on September 1st. His body was found at Alter and Forth Streets.... just blocks away from his home. Police say they have no motive for the shooting.

 

ID Ring

A Hazleton man has been busted in an alleged ID – theft ring... broken up earlier this week in New Jersey. Federal authorities say 44 – year old Porfirio Paredes is alleged to be part of a stolen identity tax refund scheme. 13 others were arrested and face a long list of charges.

 

Prank

It's a case of a prank that went bad. A Michigan man was arrested after he sprayed a fire extinguisher under a co – worker's door early Wednesday morning at the Candlewood Suites in Sugarloaf Township. Robert Birckelbaw was allegedly intoxicated... and sprayed a dry chemical fire extinguisher... setting off fire alarms. Birckelbaw was arrested on the spot.

 

Mount Carmel Chief

Mt. Carmel has a new police chief. Borough Council okayed the appointment of 48 – year old Todd Owens as chief when they met Thursday night. Owens is a 20 – year veteran of the department.

Bwk Football

The last time George Curry walked the sidelines at Spartan Stadium, he was the head football coach of Wyoming Valley West. Friday night he was on the opposite sideline leading his Berwick Bulldogs as they attempted to break WVW's winning streak against them. Unfortunately for Berwick, the Spartans made it a 5-game streak as they came out on top of a hard-fought game 33-15.

 

Game of Week

The Panthers of Bloomsburg secured their third straight win Friday night when they beat Jersey Shore at Panther Stadium in our game of the week. The Mercy Rule came into effect early in the game, the final was 35-13.

 

High School Football

Southern Columbia, Central Columbia, and Danville all remained unbeaten Friday night. Southern beat South Williamsport 42-21, Central beat Milton 21-8, and Danville beat Mifflinburg 23-13.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies completed their sweep of the New York Mets Thursday night with a 16-1 thrashing. Philly had huge rallies for the 15-run win. The Phils travel to Atlanta for a weekend series with the Braves. Catch all the action following high school football on the WHLM Stations.
