Bloomsburg Budget

Bloomsburg Town Council has until the end of the year to come up with a 2013 spending plan... and Wednesday night the members holding the first in a number of budget sessions. They heard from the department heads of Recycling... the Fire Department... Public Works and Code Enforcement... looking over their capital expenditure requests.

 

Bloomsburg Fair Setup

They're still pulling trailers of all shapes and sizes... rolling into the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. Concessionaires still setting up shop for this year's 157th exhibition. Brenda Scott and her husband, George, rolled in Wednesday from Bellefonte towing two big trailers for their pork roasting business. Ms. Scott said it took a lot of effort to become a concessionaire six years ago. The fair opens Friday with a preview... with the first official day on Saturday.

 

Drug Bust

A Berwick man is in the Columbia County Prison after he was arrested Wednesday on numerous drug – related charges. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's  edition.. 32 – year old Andre Popov allegedly had the ingredients for making meth... stashed in a backpack. He never had an opportunity to produce any of the drug before police collared him. Popov is homeless... and is being held on $250,000 bond.

 

Absentee Ballots

If you're not going to be in Columbia County on election day... you can vote by absentee ballot... but first you must make an application with the election office. Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says the new Voter ID law will play a part in requesting a ballot. Repasky says the applications are now being processed with the first absentee ballots in the mail the first week of October.

 

BTE Auditions

They're getting ready for the holiday season. The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble will hold tryout's tonight for two Christmas time productions... “A Christmas Carol...” and “Live from Bloomsburg, a Very Special Christmas.” The BTE's Syreeta Cannaday says those auditioning should come prepared to read a nursery rhyme and sing a Christmas Carole. Ms. Cannaday says they're looking for kids and teens from 7 through 18 for the shows. BTE is also looking for prospective actors with dance, gymnastics and other types of performance experience. Auditions get underway tonight at 6 at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Center Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Barletta / Disaster Loans

The U.S. House of Representatives... on a voice vote Wednesday night... has passed legislation authorized by Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton. The Disaster Loan Fairness Act would lower interest rates of disaster loans issued by the federal government's Small Business administration to victims of presidential declared disasters. Rates would be capped at 4%. Included in the legislation would be those affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee last August and September. The measure now goes to the Senate for its consideration.

 

Conyngham / Sugarloaf

The agreement has been around since the early 70's... now the Conyngham Borough Authority wants to break a sewage treatment contract with Sugarloaf Township. There are three issues for potential litigation... and solicitor Christopher Slusser has been given the go – ahead as to weather the contract can be terminated. The authority would then come up with a new, up to date agreement.

 

Hazleton Housing

The Hazleton Housing Authority plans to spend an estimated $136,000 for improvements for families living in the Vine West neighborhood. According to a plan to be submitted... the money would be earmarked for roofs... downspouts and rain gutters. In addition... money for home appliances such as refrigerators... stoves and toilets is also included in the plan to be submitted to the federal department of Housing and Urban Development by the middle of October.

 

Encephalitis Case

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is reporting a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis that killed a horse in neighboring Luzerne County earlier this month. The virus can be fatal to humans... and is carried by mosquitoes. It's not known where the horse was stabled... but a Luzerne County health department spokesperson says no areas have been quarantined.

 

Mount Carmel Chief

Mt. Carmel could have a new police chief by the end of the week. Borough Council is expected to okay the appointment of Todd Owens as chief when they meet Thursday night. Owens is a 20 – year veteran of the department. He'll succeed Brian Shurock who resigned this past May.

The Bloomsburg University football team was unbeaten last season when they lost to L.I.U. Post in a snowstorm at Redman Stadium. This Saturday afternoon in Long Island, the Huskies will once again take an unbeaten record into the game against the Pioneers who are 2-0 on the season. Bloomsburg at L.I.U. New York Giants

Henry Hynoski and his New York Giants are on the road tonight after opening the season with two straight home games. The Giants play the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 victory against the New York Mets Wednesday night. Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Phillies rallied for two runs to take the lead. The Phil's and Mets end their three game series tonight. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:35 on the WHLM Stations.
