Bloomsburg Arrests

Two Bloomsburg University students are in the Columbia County Prison after they allegedly held up two men early Thursday morning in the 300 block of East Second Street. Police say 18 – year old DeJuan Franks... a BU football player... and 19 – year old Laye Donzo approached the victim. Franks displayed what appeared to be a handgun and slugged one of the men... getting away with about a hundred dollars in cash and a cell phone. The gun turned out to be fake. Bloomsburg PD is investigating the incident.


Marcellus Study

Geisinger Health System is partnering with Guthrie Health of Sayre to determine the impact the Marcellus Shale field workers. Dr. David Carey of the Weis Research Center in Danville says Geisinger brings a lot to the table... such as a files of patient information. Guthrie Health decided to get involved in the study... since they're about a mile south of the New York State Border. Most of Guthrie's patients are from New York state where fracking is not allowed. Preliminary results should be out within a year.


Barletta Vote

Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton... who represents Columbia County... has voted with the House Committee on Education and Workforce to block President Obama's plan to undermine the 1996 welfare reform law. The house committee voting 22 to 16 to approve legislation that would prevent Mr. Obama from implementing his plan to waive work requirements contained in the '96 measure. Barletta says the move by the president is similar to the government's failure to enforce illegal immigration laws.


Caregiver Forum

It's something we don't like to think about... being a primary caregiver to a relative... or simply an end of life issue. Prior to a forum in Berwick on Thursday hosted by State Representative David Millard of Millville... elder care attorney Mary Ann Kreischer of Bloomsburg... says the most important aspect is planning. Panelists for the forum included representatives from Columbia County's Veterans Affairs.. Columbia – Montour Home Health.. as well as the Office of Aging.


Danville Schools

Danville officials are willing to review last week’s variance denial that would have forced the school district to abandon the Danville Middle School and pay as much as $30 - million to construct a new building. At a school board’s meeting this week... borough secretary Tom Graham said a variance could be offered if the board clarified what proof of hardships would stem from not receiving the variance.

School board President Allan Schappert estimated that the total cost of repairing the middle school building and wet flood-proofing it would be around $8 - million. The Borough says they are willing to work with the school district to get a variance so that the Danville Middle School could be open for the 2013-2014 school year.


Reithoffer Shows

With the opening of the Bloomsburg Fair a little over a week away.... Reithoffer Shows is starting to bring in the rides for the midway. One of the most spectacular and exciting attractions this year is The Stinger. Rick Reithoffer says the ride is a big hit on the European carnival circuit. The 157th annual exposition begins with a preview next Friday... with the fair opening on the 22nd... running thru the 29th.


Hazle Township

Hazle Township has award a $205,000 contract earmarked for the paving of 19th and 20th Streets... near the Hazleton High School complex. But... the work is predicated on getting a 75 – thousand dollar grand from the Luzerne County Community Development Department. No word when that department will award the grant to Hazle Township.



There is a criminal investigation underway by the Luzerne County District Attorney's office at the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority. They say it's a probe into possible wrongdoing... and it centers on former executive director Fred DeSanto. He resigned late last month... hours before he was to be interviewed by investigators. The authority... meantime... is cooperating with the on – going probe.


Train Station

The Turbotville Heritage Society is putting the pieces together... as they try an rebuild their train station they acquired from the former Magee Transportation Museum late last year. They were putting the finishing touches on the project when it was blown down by high winds last month... and since that time... volunteers have been picking through the rubble to see what is salvageable. Now... there is frame work in place. Volunteers hope to use the doors and windows from the original station.


Williamsport Bridge

There is a new bridge open in Lycoming County. It links Williamsport and DuBoistown.... and crosses the west branch of the Susquehanna River. It's been under construction the past two years... and was finally open to traffic this week.

Southern / Mt Carmel

Southern Columbia renewed their high school football rivalry with Mount Carmel Friday night at Tiger Stadium in our game of the week. The Tigers went back and forth but came out victorious, 49-33.


Berwick Bulldogs

The Bulldogs of Berwick took their third straight win in their game against Dallas Friday night at Crispin Field. he final was Berwick 50 - Dallas 14.


High School Football

In other Friday night games... Danville beat Shamokin 20-10... Bloomsburg trounced Warrior Run 49-7... Central Columbia beat Loyalsock 22-6... and Columbia Montour Vo Tech fell to South Williamsport 55-0.

BU Football

In college football Saturday afternoon Bloomsburg University and Kutztown, two of the nation's top ranked teams, play at Redman Stadium. It is the PSAC East opener for both teams. The game begins at 2:30. Coverage on the WHLM stations begins at 12:30 with The Husky Tailgate Show.



In the NFL Thursday night... the Green Bay Packers downed the Chicago Bears 23 to 10. Chicago's Jay Cutler sacked seven times in the loss.


Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies seven game winning streak came to an end last night. They were defeated by the Houston Astro's 6 to 4. The two teams meet again Friday night. Catch the action following Friday night's high school football on the WHLM Stations.
