Millard / Floodwall
State Representative David Millard of Millville says despite being turned down by the feds for a floodwall on Bloomsburg's west side... he has come up with his own measure. House Bill 1916 would be a $50 – million bond issue... with $20 million earmarked for flood protection or buyouts. Millard said the money could also be earmarked for flood protection for Autoneum and Bernardi Foods who currently hold the key to an estimated 1,000 jobs.
It's not an easy job trying to renovate a 50 year old school that has stood the test of time. And that's what the Central Columbia School District will do with their current high school in the 4700 block of Old Berwick Road. Central Superintendent Harry Mathias says final plans must be okayed by the State Department of Education... and permits from Scott Township and Columbia County. It was only a few weeks ago the Central Schoolboard... and that of Bloomsburg... turning down a consolidation proposal.... opting to renovate the sprawling school at an estimated cost of $28 – million.
There will be some traffic trouble spots to contend with this week... if you use Interstate 80. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the right lane of I-80 eastbound from the Berwick / Lime Ridge interchange to Mifflinville... will be closed until 6 O'clock Tuesday night. It's designed to allow trucks working on the Susquehanna River bridge to have enough room for road paving work. Starting Wednesday... the right lane of I-80 westbound at Mifflinville will be closed for paving work to tie into the reconstructed bridge over Route 339. Traffic, in both instances, will be funneled down to one lane... and that could lead to a backup.
Hazleton police have no suspects in custody in the shooting death of a 34 – year old man early Saturday morning. Erick Gwaltney of the 600 block of Alter Street was found in the area of Fourth and Alter... after police received calls of shots fired. Detectives are at a standstill in their investigation as they search for a person of interest. Authorities say Gwaltney was shot in the shoulder... the chest and stomach... and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire investigators say a Saturday morning blaze at a Freeland apartment building was deliberately set. The fire began when someone doused a “for sale” sign with an accelerant... attached to vinyl siding. There wasn't much damage to the building... and the folks who live there weren't forced out of their homes.
Luzerne Co Fair
The Luzerne County Fair kicks off Wednesday. This is the 50th annual edition... behind held at the fairgrounds in Lehman Township... near Dallas. Entertainment this year ranges from a top – pop band from the 50's and 60's to an Elvis impersonator. The fair runs thorough Sunday.
After opening the season with a 44 - 28 win over Stonehill College, the Bloomsburg University football team moved up 6 spots to 19th in the nation in the latest American Football Coaches Association Poll. Bloomsburg is one of four PSAC teams in the national poll. California is 10th; Kutztown is 11th, and IUP is 23rd. The Huskies play their home opener this Saturday against Edinboro at 1 o'clock. There will be free admission to the game. It will be part of the Huskies One Town, One Team, Flood Recovery Recognition Day.
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of a three-game set Monday by a final score of 4 - 2. It marked the first Major League win for rookie starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd. Jimmie Rollins came to Cloyd's aide when he hit a three-run home runn in the fifth inning and John Mayberry added to it by hitting a solohome runn in the sixth.
