Trooper Death

Funeral services are expected to be announced Friday for an off – duty state trooper... based in Hazleton. 27 – year old Royce Engler, Jr died when he lost control of his motorcycle Wednesday night on the entrance ramp to Route 42 in Montour Township... striking a guardrail and landing on the pavement. Investigators say Engler was not wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Man Burned

A Bloomsburg man is in the Lehigh Valley Hospital after being burned late Thursday afternoon by an apparent punctured propane tank. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition... 82 – year old Lasalo Balla of Summit Avenue was in his workshop... when for some unknown reason... the tank apparently exploded. Balla was first rushed to Geisinger in Danville... before being transferred to the Lehigh Valley Hospital.

 

Hurricane Relief

As Hurricane Isaac exits the Gulf Coast... the American Red Cross is moving in with relief efforts. Rita Inklovich of the Bloomsburg chapter of the American Red Cross says the northeast region has sent 25 relief workers... as well as two fully – stocked trucks.

 

Scott Township

It's been a pretty tough year for anyone affected by the flood waters produced by Tropical Storm Lee... nearly a year ago. Area's of Scott Township between the Susquehanna River and the North Shore Railroad was especially hard hit... the municipal building enduring four feet of muddy water... but Township Secretary Eric Stahley says recovery efforts were quick because of township employees.

 

Mile Run

Registrations are still coming in for the 5th annual Market Street Mile which will be held next Friday in Downtown Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg University's Bernard Empie says the event has become an annual tradition to support scholarships for cross country and track and field teams.

 

Hazleton Schools

The school year at the Hazleton Area District started Thursday... without much of a hitch. However... students at the high school were faced with metal detectors as they entered the building. Students and faculty members had to empty their pockets before going through the scanners... something we all do at airports. Superintendent Francis Antonelli says the detectors are designed to keep kids and teachers safe.

 

Delbridge Retrial

A former Hazle Township man will face trial for the second time October 2nd on child sex abuse charges. Gerald Delbridge had been in prison for 14 - years... until his 1999 conviction was recently overturned. Now... he's back in the Luzerne County Jail awaiting re - trial. His initial conviction was overturned by the State Superior Court after it was determined the two kids who accused him of abuse may have had their testimony tainted by counselors and police.

 

Union County Fire

Fire investigators will try and figure out today what started a blaze Thursday evening which destroyed a sawmill near Mazeppa... in Union County. The four – alarm blaze began early last evening at Kuhns Brothers Log Homes. It took volunteer firemen from Union, Snyder and Northumberland Counties an estimated 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

 

Woman Arrested

A Berwick woman has been charged with stealing pills from a drug store where she used to work in State College. The Centre Daily Times reports, 23-year-old Brianna Harner, is accused of stealing 220 hydrocodone tablets worth $144 from the CVS pharmacy at the Nittany Mall. Police say she also took makeup, cigarettes and other merchandise worth $328. Harner was arrested by the Attorney General’s Office after a report from the pharmacy. She is free on bail awaiting a preliminary hearing.

 

Drug Buy

Two Northumberland County men are jailed after they allegedly delivered 70 packets of heroin to a police informant. 26 – year old Darryl Kashner of Shamokin... and 18 – year old Jordan Scicchitano of Coal Township face a long list of felony drug charges. The pair was arraigned.... and were hustled off to the Northumberland County jail on $100,000 bond each.

 

Free Fishing

Families and friends visiting Pennsylvania’s popular outdoor spots on the Labor Day holiday weekend can enjoy a day of free fishing, thanks to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Labor Day... on Monday... marks the second of two free fishing days this year in the Commonwealth. Fish For Free Days allow anyone – residents and non-residents – to legally fish in Pennsylvania with out a fishing license.

 

Food Stamps

An estimated 14% of Northumberland County residents are receiving food stamps... roughly the same as the state average... according to the Department of Public Welfare. That's a bit higher than Montour County... where 9% of the residents there getting assistance. Overall... Pennsylvania had 1.8 - million people are eligible for food stamps.

The return of head coach George Curry to the Berwick sideline highlighted the opening to the High School football season. Friday night... Curry's Bulldogs beat Crestwood 48-21. You can hear the details in the WHLM Friday Night Football report:

 

 

Huskies Football

In College action Friday night, the Bloomsburg Huskies were on the road at Stonehill College to open their season. Bloomsburg beat Stonehill in that match 44-28.

 

Other Games

In other local action Friday night, Central Columbia beat Hughesville 45-7... Danville defeated Milton 35-8... and Bloomsburg fell to South Williamsport 34-27.

 

Saturday Schedule

Saturday afternoon Southern Columbia is at Pius the Tenth... and Columbia Montour Vo Tech is at home against Sayre in a game you can hear on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3, Berwick's 1280 and www.whlm.com starting with the pregame show at 12:30.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Despite giving up two home runs in the first two inning's Kyle Kendrick came through as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 3 to 2 Thursday afternoon. Although the Mets took an early lead... the Phils came back in the third, fourth and fifth innings to establish a one run lead.

The Phils now travel to Atlanta where they'll face the Braves in a weekend series starting Friday evening. You can all the action following Bloomsburg University football on the WHLM Stations.
