Bloomsburg Town Council

On a vote of 5 to 2 Monday night... Bloomsburg Town Council has approved a plan that will proceed with the advertising for an assistant Town Administrator. The successful candidate would relieve some of the burden off the shoulders of Mayor Dan Knorr... as well as current town administrator Bill Lowthart. It would provide depth such as Berwick had when they lost their administrator earlier this year. One of the two councilmen voting against the proposal was Fred Trump who says the time just isn't right to hire someone... and rather wait to 2013. But Trump and Councilman Carey Howell voted in the minority. The job will be advertised with a salary of between $36 to 46,000 a year with a benefits package. Mayor Knorr, who pushed for the proposal, said the town nearly faced disaster between the end of the six week run of Ron Mull... and the hiring of Lowthart.... and was literally saved by former town administrator Carol Mas who worked at as a consultant under contract.


Airport Grant Money

It's been a busy time at the Bloomsburg Municipal Airport. The Governor's office giving out a $131,000 grant for debris removal from last September's flooding.... which devastated the facility. Town administrator Bill Lowthart says the grant is money is welcomed as the airport continues construction on realigning and extending the runway. Other facilities in line for grant money is the Danville Airport for tree removal... as well as the Hazleton airport for maintenance equipment and two new fuel trucks.


NEPA Gas Prices

It's a sign of the times.... gas prices across Columbia and Montour Counties... as well as northeastern Pennsylvania continues to inch upward. The latest Triple - A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular is hovering around the $3.74 – a – gallon mark... the same as it was over the weekend... but up five cents a gallon from a week ago. Gasoline is .25 – cents a gallon higher than a month ago. The reason... unrest in the middle east... supply problems... now the threat of Isaac in the Gulf of Mexico.


Shamokin Schools

Shamokin area schools were to ring the bell Monday to start the 2012 – 2013 school year... but that didn't happen. And it won't take place until Wednesday at the earliest. The reason... construction underway at the Shamokin Elementary School. Funding problems put the renovation work behind... causing the delay. Contractors are spending the next couple of day putting in the finishing touches and cleaning up... so kids have the best environment to work in.


BU Athletics

What's better than free.... how 'bout free Bloomsburg University football on September 8th... as Husky's take on Edinboro at their first home game of the season. BU Sports Information Director Tom McGuire says the event is flood recovery recognition day at Danny Hale field and everyone is welcomed. Helping to make the day possible is First Columbia Bank and Trust Company of Bloomsburg.


West Nile Death

A Luzerne County man is the first to die from West Nile Virus. That word coming from a Department of Health official in Harrisburg. The death of 82 – year old Joseph Krawetz occurred on Sunday... three weeks after being hospitalized for West Nile. It's the first death from West Nile in four years. As we've told you in the past... West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes.


Hazleton Accident

An unusual accident in Hazleton Monday afternoon. A late model Cadillac ended up in the side of the Duplan Building near the corner of Diamond Avenue and Cedar Streets. The driver... who remains unidentified... says a woman seated next to him grabbed his throat. Police, thus far, have not given any reason as to why she would do that. No one in the car or inside the building was injured.


Escapee Surrenders

Authorities say a 24 – year old man who failed to return to a half – way house in Hazleton... surrendered over the weekend to Bloomsburg Police. Justin Lee Vaughn left the MinSec House last Thursday to preform some community service work... and never returned. An arrest warrant was issued... but published reports says Vaughn surrendered to Bloomsburg Police late Saturday night.


WHLM Sports

High School Football

Two area high school football teams are in the top ten of the Pennsylvania Football News preseason state rankings. In Class AAA, Berwick is ranked 9th, and in Class A Southern Columbia is ranked second to Clairton, the team that beat the Tigers in last season state championship game. Berwick opens the season Friday night at Crestwood in a game that will mark the return of George Curry to the Berwick sideline. You can hear that game on Classic Rock 103.5 starting with the Coach Curry Show at 6 o'clock. Southern Columbia opens the season Saturday afternoon against Pius the 10th in Bangor. Last season the Tigers beat the Royals in the second round of the state playoffs.


Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies had Monday off... as they prepare for a three game series with the New York Mets which begins Tuesday night. Vance Worley will be on the mound for the Phillies.... while Chris Young gets the call for the Mets. You can catch all the action of Tuesday night's match up starting with the pre – game show at 6:30 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.
