Geisinger Grants

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville has been awarded nearly $4 – million dollars in grants for two programs undertaken by GMC Physicians. During a presentation Tuesday... Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Eli Avila handed out a check for $2.9 - million dollars for to study abdominal aortic aneurysm research... and an additonal $1 – million dollars in order to develop a test to better predict patients at risk of getting cancer of the esophagis. Funding for the grants... comes from the Tobacco Settlement act of 2001... and provides money to support clinical... health serivces and biomedical research.


Lou Barletta / Immigration

The issue of illegal immigrants is a touchy subject in Washington these days... so says congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton. Appearing on the Monday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... Barletta telling Joe... discussing illegals is almost taboo since most congressmen are afraid of offending anyone leading up to election day. Meantime... President Obama has signed a measure giving 1.2 – million illegals work permits... good for two years. That happened... according to Barletta as 24 – million American workers go without a job.


Bloom / Central Consolidation

It appears consolidation between the Bloomsburg Area School District and Central Columbia is dead in the water. School directors for both districts defeating proposals Monday night calling for a merger of the two systems. Increased property taxes and questions about academics were the biggest stumbling blocks. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition that the move paves the way for Central to begin planning for an estimated $28 - million renovation of the district's 50 – year old high school on Old Berwick Road. Bloomsburg, meantime, will spend an estimated $100,000 to flood proof the middle and high school in the event of future high water.


School Open

Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says the first day of school Monday... in the Bloomsburg District... went off without a hitch. The chief spending some time at the Memorial School at the corner of Fifth and East Streets. Chief Sokoloski says officers will be posted at the Memorial school to aid and assist students and their parents... as well as at the Bloomsburg middle and senior high school.


Power Outage

That power outage experienced Monday morning from Buckhorn to Bloomsburg... into Montour Township is a thing of the past. A PPL spokesperson says an undetermined problem with a circuit breaker at 7:45 left an estimated 1,400 homes and businesses without power. The lack of juice forced businesses in the Buckhorn area to close down... or severely curtail their activities. Traffic was slowed on Mall Boulevard since most the traffic lights were effected. The power was restored before noon time.


Stuff the Bus

There are a lot of happy elementary age students in the Berwick Area District. The Berwick Area United Way handing out nearly 500 backpacks to public and private school children getting ready to go back to school on Wednesday. United Way CEO Ginny Crake says kids will get backpacks at two church – based schools... as well as Nescopeck... Salem... 14th Street... and Orange Street. Ms. Crake says during the past month... folks have been purchasing school supplies and dropping them off at designated locations... with volunteers stuffing the backpack with the goodies.


Murder Suspect

Hazleton police have charged a 17 – year old teenager in connection with the death of a 29 - year old man beaten and left for dead in the theft of his iPhone. Mitchell Dedes was initially arrested and charged with threatening people with a 44 – magnum handgun. But now, cops say he's been charged in the death of Aaron Reznick. Already in custody charged with Reznick's death is 19 – year old Breon Judon of Hazleton. He's in jail... as well as Dedes.


Wal-Mart Thefts

The Wal-Mart in Hometown... south of Hazleton was the target of thieves early Monday morning. Authorities say three men made off with an estimated 10 – thousand dollars worth of consumer electronics from the Rush Township store. The bandits taking Kindles... and laptop computers... and every other electronic item in the cases. Police say they were so organized two getaway cars were used in their escape.


Wilkes – Barre Theater Robbery

Police are looking for a man with a gun who held up the R/C Wilkes–Barre Movies 14 late Sunday night... taking an undisclosed amount of cash off a theater employee. Surveillance video shows a man... wearing an “Army” T – shirt strolling through a garage just prior to the stickup. The unidentified man was last seen running down South Washington Street.


Selinsgrove Fire

A Selinsgrove family is spending time with relatives after a fire caused extensive damage of their home in the 100 – block of Susquehanna Avenue. Authorities say a child knocked over a lamp... setting a bed on fire. Two nearby firemen used a garden hose to help squelch the flames. The fire caused an estimated $15,000 worth of damage.


Union County Crash

An elderly Milton woman is dead following a two car crash Sunday near Lewisburg. State Police say a car driven by 83 – year old Hazel Hock collided with a foreign compact driven by a 17 – year old Milton teenager. Hock was pronounced dead at the scene... the teenage driver was rushed to Geisinger Medical Center where he's being treated.

Southern Columbia

For the second consecutive year, the Southern Columbia football team must replace the entire starting backfield from the previous season. Head Coach Jim Roth evaluates his starting quarterback- senior Taylor Young. Roth says Young has a pretty good arm, but during the off – season they worked on Young's consistency. Southern Columbia has a scrimmage at Montoursville this Friday night. The Tigers open the season Saturday afternoon, September 1st at Pius the 10th.


Philadelphia Phillies

John Mayberry, Jr hit a two run homer... and Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz had solo shots... as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Cincinnati Reds 12 to 5 Monday night. Winning pitcher Roy Halladay allowed five runs and ten hits in seven innings. The Phil's and the Reds meet again Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30... with the first pitch at 7:05 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.


Philadelphia Vs. New England

In pre – season NFL action last night... the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 27 to 17.
