Schools in the Bloomsburg Area School District open their doors today in order to start the 2012 – 2013 school year. Superintendent Cos Curry says there are 182 instructional days on the calendar... but there is some wiggle room at the end of the year in the event of snow days. Meantime... the Central Columbia and Berwick district's ring their school bells this Wednesday... with Danville's first day of class a week from today.
Volunteers spent the weekend working on the new and improved SkatePark.... nestled in between the Bloomsburg swimming pool and town park. Team leader Travis Creveling says the centerpiece of the new SkatePark will be a cement bowl... 30 by 60 feet in length... and eight feet deep. Creveling says the committee in charge of the work has raised an estimated $12,000 with donations coming in every day. The work is being preformed by volunteers... with materials for the project deeply discounted.
Relay for Life
It took 24 hours... but folks involved with the Relay for Life event at Bloomsburg's Town Park raised just over $11,000 in their fight against cancer. An although the skies opened up late Friday night... into Saturday morning... organizer Patti Zwalkuski says volunteers stuck it out... walking around the track... making the difference. The money raised by the event will be used locally so the American Cancer Society can continue their many programs which support cancer patients.
A 19 – year old Hazleton man is in jail... now charged in the death of a 29 – year old Ebervale resident. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 is reporting Breon Judon is charged in the death of Aaron Reznick. He died a week ago... after he was found in the middle of Carson Street earlier this month. Police say Reznick was allegedly beaten over an iPhone. The most serious charged lodged against Judon over the weekend is homicide... kidnapping... robbery. Police say one more arrest is expected in the case.
A 24 – year old West Hazleton woman could spend the next ten years in a state correctional facility after she pleaded “no contest” to an aggravated assault charge. Andrea Lynn Vargas admitted in court at the start of the weekend... that she beat and then shook her six month old son in February of 2011. The nearly 2 – year old youngster is in a long – term care facility... being kept alive. In making her plea... prosecutors cannot use it against her if she comes to trial again in the event the youngster dies from his injuries.
If you're headed to neighboring Luzerne County using Interstate 80... you may have to face some delays. PennDOT says the right lane of I-80 eastbound between the Berwick and Mifflinville interchanges will be closed until 5 O'clock Monday afternoon to preform road widening work. That means traffic will be funneled into a single lane... and that may mean back – up's as you approach the Berwick / Lime Ridge interchange.
Berwick / Front Street
If you plan to use northbound Route 11 in Berwick... between Oak and Mulberry Streets... there may be some delays. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says Barletta Materials began a paving project Sunday night... which consists of closing the left lane so crews can excavate... place sub – base materials... and then paving the roadway. When that's finished... the right lane will have the same procedure preformed. Paving will continue on an around – the – clock basis through next Saturday.
While Pennsylvania has not executed a death-row inmate since 1999, a rash of death warrants signed in the past 10 days by Gov. Tom Corbett could see four men lethally injected within 11 days in October. Mr. Corbett has signed four execution warrants since August 8th, including three last week... bringing his total to 19 in fewer than two years in office.
The Bloomsburg University football team is just two weeks away from their season opener. The Huskies strength on defense should be at linebacker. All three starters return including two all conference selections. Defensive coordinator Paul Darragh sophomore Justin Shirk has decent skill sets... adding Shirk is “football smart.” The Huskies open the 2012 season Friday night, August 31st in Easton, Massachusetts against Stonehill College.
Kyle Kendrick tossed his second straight scoreless outing and Domonic Brown collected three hits with four RBI's as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated beat the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, 8-0, in the finale of a four-game set. Kendrick scattered three hits and walked one while striking out seven over eight innings, helping him win consecutive starts. The Phil's return home to Citizens Bank Park Monday night to take on the Cincinnati Reds in a four game set.
