Cawley Tours Fairgrounds

Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Jim Cawley spent a couple of hours on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Thursday... taking a look at the progress made over the past year following the floods of September. Cawley was at the fairgrounds weeks following the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee... and says Thursday's tour is the definition of Pennsylvania resilience. The flood caused a million dollars worth of damage to the fairgrounds... and try as they might to get the 2011 show off the ground... the fair association board had to cancel the event. But, the mud and debris have been swept away... with this year's Fair now scheduled to get underway September 22nd.

 

Lost Tractor Trailer

An unusual sight at the top of North Street in Bloomsburg.... at First Street... behind the Bloomsburg Health Care Center. An out of state tractor – trailer stuck with no where to go. Bloomsburg Police officer Jim Cromley said the driver went north on North Street... the wrong way on a one – way street. When the driver found he couldn't make a left turn... he attempted to back down. When he did... the driver snagging a utility poll... bringing down power lines. A PPL crew had to cut power to make repairs... and that tossed homes and traffic lights in the dark. The unidentified driver eventually backed down North Street... and went on his way.

 

Tip Jar Theft

Bloomsburg Police have arrested two men wanted in connection with the theft of a tip jar at a East Main Street business. The theft taking place earlier this month at Franks Pizza. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Friday's edition... 20 – year old Mark McCord of Carbondale... and 18 – year old Luke Cramer of Fairvew... surrendered after a security camera video began making the rounds. McCord and Cramer... two summer freshmen students at Bloomsburg University... admit to the theft... and face a preliminary hearing next month.

 

Flood Mitigation

Work continues in the middle of Fishing Creek on the west end of Bloomsburg to remove the gravel island that has built up over the years. The flood mitigation project... near the former Magee boat dock.... is being performed by contractor Bill Anskis of Elysburg. The work is being funded by a million dollar grant earmarked for Fishing Creek flooding requested several years ago by State Representative David Millard through the former Rendell administration.

 

Bloomsburg Nationals

The 1st annual Bloomsburg Nationals classic car show kicks off today at the fairgrounds. Thousands of cars from across the northeast will descend on the area... now through Sunday. One of the highlights... the Friday afternoon gridlock cruise – in on Main Street from Iron to West Streets. Lance Miller of Carlisle Events says it not only brings people downtown, but give car owners to strut their stuff.

Carlisle Events of Cumberland County... as well as the Dream Machines Motor Club of Bloomsburg are co – hosting this weekend's event.

 

Ice Cream & Cake Festival

The 55th annual Ice Cream and Cake Festival at the Bloomsburg Town Park lasted only 90 – minutes or so thanks to thundershowers rolling through the area. The always – enjoyable Catawissa Military Band was just getting into the patriotic music set when the skies opened up. The rain sent a couple of hundred folks scrambling for cover. But, before that happened... it was a pretty enjoyable night... with plenty of baked cake to go around... plus gallons of home made ice cream dished out by celebrity servers.

 

Hazleton Power Outage

Most of the 6,900 PPL customers in Hazleton... Schuylkill and Carbon Counties have had power restored... after loosing juice for about 30 – minutes during a storm Thursday afternoon. A utility spokesperson said the problem was centered in a sub – station in East Hazleton. Now... PPL workers are trying to track down what caused Thursday's outage.

 

McAdoo Fatal

A 64 – year old McAdoo man is dead... after falling in front of a dump truck... and being run over. The incident happened on South Kennedy Drive in McAdoo when Michael Dormer was trying to walk across the street. Police ruled Mr. Dormer's death an accident... saying the driver of the truck will not be charged.

 

Hazleton Chief DeAndrea

Hazleton Police Chief Frank DeAndrea says he wants a hearing dealing with a traffic citation he recently received... stemming from a crash between his police cruiser and a motorcyclist. DeAndrea was cited for running a red light... thus causing the crash. The 83 – year old man on the motorcycle was also cited for not having an inspection sticker. State Police... who conducted the crash investigation... say Chief DeAndrea blew through the light at Broad and Laurel Streets this past May.

 

Bicyclist Killed

A Hunlock Creek resident is being questioned after he allegedly ran down an elderly man on a bicycle earlier this week in West Nanticoke. 19 – year old Matthew Perkins was picked up when a witness claims Perkins swerved and hit the 73 – year old Richard Stadts as he peddled along Route 11 near a Bar-b-Que restaurant. Stadts died Wednesday. Police say Perkins was arrested back in May for public drunkenness. Now... police are awaiting the results of some tests to see if Perkins was drunk at the time of the accident.

 

Barletta / Stilp

The race for congress in the 11th congressional district... which includes Columbia County may heat up a bit. Democratic congressional candidate Gene Stilp is challenging incumbent Representative Lou Barletta to a series of nine debates leading up to the November 6th election. Stilp is already committed to a debate at Luzerne County Community College. Barletta... through his campaign manager... says he looks forward to the challenge.

 

Shooting Folo

Northumberland County District Attorney Anthony Rosini has not determined if charges will be filed against the parents of an eight year old boy who shot himself last weekend. The child apparently got into a gun cabinet... got a loaded semi – automatic handgun... and accidentally shot himself in the hip. The incident happening at his parent's home on Dogwood Lane in Point Township. The youngster is listed in serious, but stable condition at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Notre Dame

As part of the NCAA sanctions against the Penn State football program, all Nittainy Lion players were allowed to transfer to another school without having to sit out a season. Some schools actively recruited Penn State players while other schools stayed away. Although Notre Dame did not recruit any current Penn State players... Coach Brian Kelly said they did pick up Will Fuller, a wide receiver who will be a senior this fall at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Fuller had given a verbal commitment to Penn State before changing his mind.

 

NFL Preseason

It was the battle of Pennsylvania in NFL preseason football last night in Philadelphia. Alex Henery kicked a 51-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to lift the Philadelphia Eagles to a 24-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason opener last night.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Roy Halladay is on the mound for Philadelphia... while Kyle Lohse heads for the hill for St. Louis. Catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30... the first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280.
