Lightning Victim IDed

A 41 – year old man from Moosic... in Lackawanna County... has been identified as the victim of a lighting strike Sunday afternoon at the Pocono Raceway. Monroe County coroner Robert Allen says Brian Zimmerman was standing near his car behind the grandstand area when lighting struck. He was immediately administered CPR... but died later at a Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. Authorities say nine other people were hurt by the strike. Five were taken to Pocono Raceway's infield medical Center... the others taken to near – by hospitals.

 

Barletta / Floodwall

There has been a lot of disappointment around Bloomsburg the past few weeks since the US Army Corps of Engineers said they would not participate in any floodwall project to protect the Town's west side. The decision is not setting well with Congressman Lou Barletta. He says a thousand jobs are hanging in the balance at Reiter Carpet and Bernardi foods.

 

Turbotville Train Station

A train station which had been a mainstay at the Magee Transportation Museum in the 70's... survived the floods of '72 and '06... then moved to the Turbotville Community Park last year... is in shambles. The one story building was flattened by winds produced by a thunderstorm Saturday afternoon. The only thing recognizable is the roof and the back wall. Since acquiring the building... volunteers have spent a lot of time getting it to shape. No word if the Turbotville Heritage Society will re-construct the building.

 

National Night Out

National Night Out.... a way for Bloomsburg Police to heighten crime prevention and awareness among all of us. The event takes place Tuesday evening at the Town's swimming pool at the corner of Catherine and Ft. McClure Boulevard. There will be free swimming with lifeguards on duty. The Bloomsburg Police Department... as well as the WHLM Stations are sponsoring the event... which begins at 6 O'clock.

 

Luzerne Time System

Luzerne County continues to struggle with implementing a time clock and an associated payroll system. County Manager Robert Lawton says converting information from the new biometric clock system... using fingerprints... to payroll information is proving to be a challenge. The system was purchased in 2010 by the former Luzerne County Commission for $462,000.

 

Huber Breaker

Huber Breaker... in Ashley... is one of the Luzerne County's most endangered historical landmarks. That word from the leaders of historical and preservation groups who met over the weekend. However, it appears the last standing anthracite breaker will not be restored anytime soon. The complex is tied up in US Bankruptcy Court due to the breaker's owner going bust in early 2010.

 

Rail Crossing

If you use Railroad Street in Bloomsburg for your daily commute... you'll need to find a way around the 8th street rail crossing. Starting Monday... Railroad at 8th street will be closed for the next week. The North Shore Rail crossing will receive some needed upgrades. Officials say there will be signs in place marking detours around the area.

 

Commissioner's Association

Members of the County Commissioners Association are headed to Hershey this week for their 126th annual conference. One of the hot topics is the voter ID Law... which is still up in the air. Executive Director Doug Hill says most counties are printing more provisional ballots than usual... in order to get ready for voters who come to the polls without a photo ID. The voter ID law is still in limbo for Pennsylvania's November election... due to a hearing held last week. A decision is expected by the end of the month.

 

Bridge Inspections

In-depth bridge inspections in two area counties are scheduled to take place thru Tuesday. PennDOT will conduct an in-depth inspection of the Route 487 plate-girder bridge over Shamokin Creek in Ralpho Township over the next two days. Agency spokesman Rick Mason says there will be daylight flagging, with minor traffic impacts. On Tuesday.... inspections will also take on the Route 254 plate-girder bridge over Chillisquaque Creek in Derry Township in Montour County. There will be single-lane conditions, with daylight flagging and minor traffic impacts.

 

WHLM Sports

BU Football

Bloomsburg University's Danny Hale and the other head football coaches from the PSAC East schools will be meeting in West Chester Monday. The occasion is the pre - season media day. The Huskies first practice will be this Thursday. The season opener is Friday night, August 31st at Stonehill College near Boston.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

A big day Sunday for the Philadelphia Phillies. They defeated the Arizona Diamondback 5 to 4 thanks to a bases loaded RBI single by Ryan Howard in the bottom of the 9th. Cliff Lee pitched eight innings giving up eight hits... including three home runs. Philadelphia begins a three game series with the Atlanta Braves Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30... with the first pitch to be tossed at 7:05... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Pennsylvania 400

Jeff Gordon snaps a 31 – race winless streak... claiming victory Sunday in the rain – shortened Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway.
