Accident Victim Identified
No autopsy is planned for a 52 - year old Danville woman who died in a one – car crash last night at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek... on Bloomsburg's west end. Columbia County Deputy Coroner Linda Kessler says Rose Marie Galutia died of blunt force trauma to the neck. Ms. Galutia... of Drum Road... was westbound on Ft. McClure Blouvard... at an aparent high rate of speed when she failed to negotiate a sharp right hand turn. Her late model car hitting a stone memorial... flying through the branches of trees... and landing on it's roof in the creek. She was alone at the time of the accident.
Skate Park Fundraiser
The replacement and repair of Bloomsburg's Skate Park... between the town park and the swimming pool... on Ft. McClure Boulevard... will soon get underway. A fundraiser will be held Sunday to help bring in part of the the estimated $150,000 in repair work. During a recent interview... Town Park Improvement Association President Chuck Wagner says the park will be rebuilt a little at a time. This Sunday's fund raiser will take place at the Bloomsburg Volunteer Fire Department on Market Street.
Bloomsburg Art Fest
A big weekend on tap for downtown Bloomsburg. It begins with ArtFest on Centre Street starting at 10 AM... with plenty of artisans expected to be on hand. Tim Wagner of Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated says ArtFest transitions to a Saturday night movie at dusk. The feature... The Muppet's movie. Main Street in Bloomsburg... between Centre and Market becomes a car free street during the movie... which gets underway at 7 O'clock
Car Wash Donation
A Fernville businessman is doing his part to replay the kindness provided by the Bloomsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross following September Flooding. Lawrence Stoddard of Fernville says he'll donate proceeds from his car washing business back to the local chapter... telling us the Red Cross provided help to his family following the flood. Stoddard has his car wash and detailing business set up on West Main Street.... in the Romig's Tavern parking lot... the location of the former Hess gas station.
Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton who represents Columbia County and a majority of northeastern Pennsylvania... was in Shickshinny Friday. During a news conference at a local hardware store... he took the wraps off a modified Small Business Disaster Loan Bill which he introduced on Thursday. Mr. Barletta says the measure is critical to the recovery of businesses in the 11th District... and across the country where natural disaster has jeopardized livelihoods and communities. He hopes the measure will reach the house floor for a vote in September... around the time of the first anniversary of the flooding produced by Tropical Storm Lee.
Route 309 in Wright Township... between Birk Drive and Brookfield Way... is now open to traffic. A crash and ensuing fire between a tractor – trailer and and SUV shut down the highway during Thursday afternoon's commute home from work. The SUV collided with the big rig... shearing off it's fuel tanks.The driver of the SUV telling investigators he was swatting a wasp when he hit the truck. The unidentified driver was taken to the near – by hospital for treatment.
The Schuylkill County Zoning board has given it's okay to the construction of a proposed cargo airport in the northern part of the county... just south of Hazleton. It's a project that has been twisting in the wind the past five years. It includes an estimated 4,500 acres of land in East Union and Kline Townships in Schuylkill County... and Hazle Township in Luzerne County. The proposed project would have at least one 13,000 foot runway.
It appears Hazleton City Council won't take up the issue of asking for money for permit fees and charging for police... fire and EMS Services for non – profit special events until at least October. The issue led to a shouting match between council and the organizers of Funfest... saying that paying for the services would end the event. Other non – profits who also hold festivals would also be forced to get permits and pay for services.
Reading – based UGI Utilities Inc. is alerting customers to the rising and dangerous incidents of the theft of copper pipes. The statement was issued after copper pipe... used for water and natural gas delivery... is being more attractive to thieves... and recycling businesses. UGI goes on to say... if you know of the theft of copper... give them a call immediately.
The inaugural Coal Mountain Jeep Jamboree is on tap this weekend at the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure in Northumberland County. An estimated 200 people and just over a hundred Jeeps will take part in the event... which kicked off Thursday night. Jeep Jamboree and the Northumberland County planning department is coordinating the three day show. It will be held on County – owned property... off Route 125 on the Burnside Mountain... south of Shamokin.
The Philadelphia Phillies were not able to sweep the three games in their series with the division leading Washington Nationals. The Phil's were defeated Thursday night 3 to nothing. The offensive struggles wasted a good outing from Cole Hamels who struck out nine over seven innings and allowed only the three runs on eight hits. The Phil's are back home Friday night at Citizens Bank Park where they begin a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. One of the biggest sporting events this weekend takes place a short distance east of Bloomsburg adjacent to interstate 80. The NASCAR Cup Series drivers are in northeastern PA for Sunday's Pennsylvania 400 at the Pocono Raceway. There will be several practice sessions Friday... with qualifying set for Saturday at 10:30.
