PSU Penalty React

At Penn State.... as well as around Columbia and Montour Counties... the words from NCAA President Mark Emmert still reverberating... dealing with penalties from the Sandusky sex scandal. First off... a $60 – million fine for the University... no post – season bowl games for the next four years... along with vacating team victories between '98 and 2011... and reduced scholarships. In issuing the penalties.. the NCAA's Mark Emmert said the sanctions should allow the school and athletic department to change its culture.

 

Bloomsburg Town Council

It appears Bloomsburg will soon have a new park.... a concrete skate park aimed at teens and young adults. It would replace the current one made out of plywood located between the Norris Rock Pool and the town park. Monday night... town council raising questions about the park coming in compliance with Bloomsburg's insurance carrier. That shouldn't be a problem once design specs and the builder's credentials are given to administrator Bill Lowthart. Meantime... Town Park Association president Chuck Wagner says the first phase is dependent on fund raising. The park will be built with volunteer help with skating enthusiasts Travis Creveling, Dave Chamber and Chad Gorby overseeing the project.

 

Sentence

The former assistant athletic director and trainer at Warrior Run Area Schools was sentenced Monday on child sex charges. 27 – year old Matthew Godfrey of Watsontown will spend up to 23 – months in prison... and then be on probation. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16.. says Godfrey pleaded guilty earlier this year to having sex with a student from June to November of last year.

 

Stuff the Bus

The Berwick United Way has launched a community wide backpack donation drive to give kids a sendoff when they start the school year next month. The United Way's Ginny Crake says all you have to do is purchase some items... and drop them at conveniently placed barrels. This is the third year for the donation drive... which produced more than 300 backpacks in 2011.

 

Slabtown Road

PennDOT says a maintenance crew will begin a series of drainage improvements along Slabtown Road in Locust and Catawissa Townships starting Tuesday. The agency's Rick Mason says there are eight cross pipes along Slabtown Road, between Ideal Park Road and Route 42, which need to be replaced due to deterioration. The pipe replacements will take place starting at the north end of the road and continue south. Slabtown Road will be shut down... and a detour will be in effect through late Wednesday afternoon.

 

Gas Probe

Wilkes – Barre Mayor Tom Leighton has met with Public Works department employees... and has told them to co-operate in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 18,000 gallons of fuel from the city's gas pump. Word surfaced last week that the gasoline was not accounted for... and was pumped at the Public Works garage on Conyngham Avenue. Luzerne County District Attorney Stephanie Salavantis has launched a probe into the missing gas. The city says it's just a matter of poor record keeping.

 

Stabbing Suspect

A 24 – year old Shenandoah man is in jail after he allegedly stabbed a woman over the weekend. Police say Maurice Townsend allegedly slashed a woman's arm during an argument. Townsend is charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He's currently lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

 

TV Thefts

Police in Rush Township... near Hometown... south of Hazleton are looking for a couple of alleged thieves. Surveillance video show a man and a woman making off with five televisions from the Wal – Mart in Hometown. Those TV's are valued at an estimated $1,200. The theft happened early Monday morning.

 

Shamokin Fire

A Shamokin fire investigator has ruled a Sunday blaze in an apartment building on South 5th Street was accidental and electrical in nature. Firemen squelching the blaze in a second floor unit... and preventing it from spreading. The initial call came in around 3 O'clock... and was reported out about 20 minutes later. Published reports say the building is owned by Roy Whitehair of Bloomsburg.

 

Cargill Recall

30,000 pounds of ground beef produced at Cargill Beef Wyalusing plant in near-by Bradford County... is being recalled. The product was produced on May 25th... and repackaged for sale to consumers by customers of the Kansas City – based company. Cargill says the ground been may contain salmonella.

 

Pump Prices

The average price of self – serve, unleaded regular has shot up nine cents a gallon over the past week. The Triple - A Fuel Gauge report shows the average price of gas across northeastern Pennsylvania is $3.45 a gallon. That's 9 cents a gallon higher than a week ago.... and 17 cents a gallon more than what it was a month ago.

The Philadelphia Phillies scored four runs in the 9th inning Monday night... to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 7 to 6. A combination of three hits... three walks and a sacrifice fly allowed the Phil's to grab a second walk – off victory in as many days. Philadelphia and Milwaukee continue their three game series Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Lacrosse Coach

Bloomsburg University has a new women's lacrosse coach. Mallory Poole comes to the Bloomsburg campus after spending the last three years as an assistant at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Prior to that... Poole was an assistant coach at Dartmouth College.
