Penn State Penalties

There is a somber mood on the Penn State campus... now that the NCAA has announced sanctions for the school's football program... as the result of the Sandusky Sex scandal. Topping the list... a $60 – million fine for the school... the estimated revenue Penn State made on it's football program. Also: no bowl games for the next four years... and vacating Penn State's victories from 1998 to 2011. NCAA President Mark Emmert said the so – called “death penalty” was considered but was pulled off the table when it was decided no games, whatsoever, would hurt those people not involved in the scandal. One other issue... players can transffer to other school... and will be allowed to play this fall.

 

JoPa Statue

It took a work crew only 89 minutes to cover... then remove the statue of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno from in front of Beaver Stadium Sunday. After moving the statue inside the stadium... the workers came back out and removed letters and plaques from the wall where JoPa's statue once stood. Paterno was cited in the 267 page Freeh report as being one of four people complicit in the Sandusky sex scandal... standing by doing nothing as the former assistant coach sexually abused boys. The statue and the associated hardware will be placed in a secure warehouse.

 

Benton Dogs

Those 187 dogs found in a Benton area home late last week are now up for adoption at 14 shelters around the Susquehanna Valley. The animals... mostly chihuahua's were found in the home of Thomas and Albert Ambrosia on Ridge Road in Jackson Township. They've been charged with two counts of Cruelty to Animals. The Luzerne County SPCA in Wilkes – Barre and the Lycoming County SPCA in Williamsport accepted some of the dogs for adoption.

 

Farmer's Coupons

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture... through local offices of the aging... are giving away coupons to be used at local farmers market's. Kathy Lynn from the Columbia County office on Aging tells recipients must meet certain criteria, including turning 60 this year. For more information give the Aging office a call. They're located on Sawmill Road near Lightstreet.

 

Jim Thorpe

As we initially told you last week... Jim Thorpe... in near – by Carbon County is the fourth “most beautiful” cities in the U-S. That... after a competition was conducted by Rand McNally... and USA Today. Topping the list was Bardstown, Kentucky... just east of Louisville.

 

Sleep

She's from Shickshinny... in Luzerne County... and she has a hit prime time television comedy.... but Kristin Ritter is among 41 million Americans not getting enough sleep. Ms. Ritter is hosting the “Great American Pillow Toss...” as a part of a campaign based on data provided by the Centers for Disease Control.

 

Mall Fight

A Hazleton man is in custody after a weekend stabbing at the Laurel Mall. Police say folks were lined up outside the mall early Saturday morning waiting to buy Air Jordan sneakers. That's when 19 – year old Carlos Mejia allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed two men and hurt a teenager after an exchange of words. Mejia is in the Luzerne County Jail.

 

Bid for Freedom

There was a bit of freedom for two Luzerne County jail inmates on Sunday. The pair were taking part in work release from the jail... and after taking out trash... they simply walked away. They were captured a few hours later near Pocono Downs in Plains Township... and hustled back to jail to await charges.

 

Microsurfacing Project

There could be some traffic trouble spots along Interstate 80 in Hemlock Township. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says Strawser Construction will so begin micro – surfacing the eastbound lane of the Interstate from the Columbia – Montour County line to the Buckhorn interchange. At times... traffic will be restricted to a single lane. The work is part of a $775,000 contract which includes micro – surfacing of the west bound lane of the Interstate in Union County.

NCAA Sanctions

Now that the statue of former Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno is tucked away in an on – campus storage area... now we're awaiting word from the NCAA as to the sanctions they'll level against the school. This morning in Indianapolis, the NCAA will announce what are expected to be harsh sanctions against the Penn State football program. That news conference starts around 9 O'clock. We'll tell you what the NCAA has to say.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

A decent Sunday for the Philadelphia Phillies... as they took the final game of a three game series with the San Francisco Giants 4 to 3. The hero of the game was Jimmy Rollins who hit an RBI Single in the 12th inning to win the game. Monday night... the Phil's take on the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30... with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

British Open

In golf, Ernie Ells won the British Open Sunday. It was his fourth career major title.
