Scott Twp Buyouts
23 property owners in Scott Township have been informed by FEMA that they will be bought out in the first round of flood acquisition projects. Township Secretary Eric Stahley says the feds will pony up $2.5 - million... or 75% of the acquisition... with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency contributing 23 %... with Scott township putting in the remaining 3 %. Stahley says the properties are located along Old Berwick Road between Tenny Street and Edgar Avenue.... as well as White Birch Lane. The buyout's are expected to begin sometime in September.
The State Police Major Case Team now says the death of 46 – year old Frank Spencer is a homicide. Spencer was found Tuesday by a friend... dead... in his home on Fairview Drive in Hemlock Township. An autopsy preformed at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown on Thursday documented death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Police remain tight lipped as to suspects in the case.... or the motive for the shooting. Meantime... a visitation for Spencer's friends will take place next Tuesday... starting at 4 O'clock... at the Allen Funeral home at 8th and Market Streets in Bloomsburg.
The second floor of a home in the 100 block of Coughlin Street in Berwick was extensively damaged by fire late Thursday night. Firefighters were called shortly after 11 O'clock when someone spotted smoke coming from the second story. Firemen found flames were shooting from a bedroom window. The blaze was knocked down within 40 minutes. The cause of the fire on Coughlin Street... just off Front... remains under investigation.
The walls of the 3 story building that used to house a Danville business along the 200 block of Mill Street has become the target of men with chains.. and heavy equipment. The building used to house Doc's Shoe Sales & Repair.... but little or no preventive maintenance led the borough to condemn the place and hire a crew to bring it down. One person watching the demolition process says it's a shame the building has to go. Although a portion of Mill Street is closed to traffic... demolition is expected to be wrapped by the time the Iron Heritage Festival begins the third weekend of the month.
Congressman Lou Barletta... who represents Columbia County... says he'll file two bills Friday dealing with President Obama's order allowing young, undocumented illegal aliens to stay in this country. It effects anywhere from 800,00 to 1.4 – million people. During a recent news conference... Barletta says one proposal is designed to study the impact of the Obama's executive order. A second measure to be introduced Friday by Representative Barletta protects Department of Homeland Security personnel who choose to uphold current immigration law... and refuse to follow Mr. Obama's orders.
The cause of a Tuesday fire in a double home on Diamond Avenue in Hazleton remains a mystery. Investigators combed through the house in the 500 block of Diamond... coming up empty handed. One thing is know... it began on a rear porch and spread. That fire displaced a dozen people.
A McAdoo man is in the Schuylkill County jail in lieu of $100,000 straight cash bail... after allegedly coming after a borough police officer with a butcher knife and a grilling fork. 28 – year old Dzemo Ramic is facing a long list of charges stemming from a fight he had with another man. Cops were called and that's when Ramic came after the officer.
State Representative David Millard has a new office. Earlier this week... he moved from the Tech Center in the 200 – block of Market street.... to the Market Street Plaza... in the 1000 block. He initially had an office on West Main Street, but that became a victim of the Lee flooding... forcing him to move to the tech center. The office in the Market Street Plaza joins one Rep. Millard has on Orange Street in Berwick.
Shamokin Celebrates the 4th
Although the fourth of July is history... they do things differently in Shamokin. There will be a twenty minute fireworks display Saturday night... as the city celebrates the 4th on the 7th. The Citizens for a Better Community has raised about $9,000 for the display... which will be launched from the Cameron Coal Bank... shortly after 9:30. Also on Saturday... a car cruise will be held in association with the fourth of July celebration.

David Wright hit a walk off single to right field giving the New York Mets a 6 to 5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday night. Philadelphia's Johnathan Papelbon earned the loss... and his second blown save of the season after giving up three hits and a walk in the ninth inning. The Phil's return to Citizens Bank Park tonight to start a three – game weekend series with the Atlanta Braves. Pittsburgh pitcher Jeff Karstens tossed an eight inning shutout Thursday night... as the Pirates defeated the Houston Astro's 2 to nothing at PNC Park. The victory completed a four – game sweep. Pittsburgh now begin a weekend series with the San Francisco Giants Friday night.
New York / Tampa Bay
The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday night on Florida's West Coast. The final... 4 to 3. Friday night... the Yankees take on Boston at Fenway Park.
