Thousands of people lined the streets of Millville on Wednesday to catch all or part of the 2 hour parade.... with thousands of folks in the line of march. As has been a tradition... the independence day parade was led by a color guard of all services... followed by the Millville Fire Department's emergency vehicles. The early heat of the day tempered was by clouds and a breeze. By early afternoon.... the crowds moved to the Millville Fire Company carnival grounds where many spent the rest of the day.
It was all red, white and boom at Bloomsburg's Town Park Wednesday night. A couple of thousand people made their way to the bandshell area at the park to hear patriotic music from the Catawissa Military Band... under the direction of Jessica Martz. For many... it was a great place to beat the sweltering heat.... even more people showed up as the sun was setting... and temperatures cooled. A little past dusk... and on the cue from the band a 26 minute fireworks show dotted the sky surrounding the park... with hundreds more sitting on their porch and lawn taking in the sights and sounds. The park's summer concert series continues with the musical group “Country Memories” next Wednesday at 7 O'clock.
Hit & Run
Bloomsburg Police are looking for a white motorcycle with two people which T-boned a Honda... fleeing the scene. The incident happened shortly after 10 O'clock Wednesday night at the corner of East 12th and Iron Streets following last night's fireworks display at Town Park. Police say both riders were not wearing helmets... and it's believed the bike driver slammed his head into the Honda. If you have information about the accident... call Bloomsburg Police at 784 – 6779.
State Police at Bloomsburg are still calling Tuesday's death of 46 – year old Frank Spencer of Fairview Drive in Hemlock Township... suspicious. He was found at his home with multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy is being preformed Thursday to determine how Spencer died. Spencer's pick up truck... missing from his home... was later found Tuesday evening abandoned in Sunbury.
PPL / Grid
Despite the hot weather we've been have the past two weeks or so... the major supplier of electrical power in our area is up to the task. PPL spokesperson Terri McBride says power generated by the utility goes into a interconnected grid serving 13 states. No brown outs... or blackout are expected across the grid before we get a break in the heat this Sunday.
With Pennsylvania chugging along on a $27.7 – billion budget signed into law last weekend by Governor Corbett... politicians are talking about long night's and hard core negotiations. Although a veteran at the Harrisburg political game.... WHLM News asked State Representative David Millard of Millville what he learned during the three month process. Millard says he one of many lawmakers in Harrisburg pressing for a two – year budget... that can be tweaked every now and again... instead of trying to build a spending plan from scratch ever year.
Freeland Borough Council is considering a parking permit ordinance. Under the plan discussed this week... the permit program would allow residents, business owners and their employees. Those folks living with no off street parking would have a permit to park within two blocks of their homes... while business owners and staffer would have an opportunity to get a permit to park in metered area... and not worry about slugging the meter every couple of hours. Discussions about the Freeland parking permits are on-going.
A day after Independence Day... and a dozen people are trying to get their lives together... following a fire which extensively damaged their West Diamond Avenue home in Hazleton earlier this week. The blaze breaking out Tuesday in the 500 block of West Diamond... forcing two families out into the street.
No word on what started this week's fire in Hazleton.
Rescue teams are expected to resume their search this morning for an for an unidentified man who went swimming with friends in the Susquehanna River in Exeter Township... and never surfaced. The incident took place as friends were having a cook out near the Riverview Village Mobile Home Park. Authorities spent several hours looking for the man... but had to stop when showers and thunderstorms moved in.
Police Target Drivers
State and local police, along with PennDOT, will take part in a national enforcement effort through July 8 targeting motorists who drive under the influence. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort will focus on keeping Pennsylvania’s roads safe during the Independence Day travel period... which ends Sunday.
Philadelphia's Cliff Lee won his first game of the season... as the Phillies defeated the New York Mets 9 to 2 on Wednesday. The victory also snapped a six game losing streak for the Phil's. Philadelphia wraps – up it's three game series with the Mets... Thursday night in New York. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:35... with the first pitch expected at 7:10 on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280.
In other big league action... the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Astro's Wednesday 6 to 4... and the New Yankees getting by the Tampa Bay Rays 4 to 3.
