Columbia Montour Vo Tech is coming off a 4-6 season. The Rams qualified for the District 4 AAA playoffs for the 6th time under Mark Varner who is now in his 12 season as head coach.
There is optimism for the Rams this season and much of that optimism is based on the return of a trio of talented skill position players:quarterback Trevor Welsh, wide receiver John Binder, and running back Sevon King all juniors. Welsh, who is starting for the third straight season, threw for 1073 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2016. Binder caught 27 passes for 675 yards and 7 touchdowns, and King rushed for 731 yards and 9 touchdowns.
If the line comes through, the Rams could have a potent offense. The line has experience returning with Hunter Palko, Logan Billig, and Tyler Dunn rotating at the tackle positions, and Gabe Ernest and Ryan Cooper starting at the guards. The newcomers will be center Owen Reichner and tight end Gage Michael both freshmen.
On defense Varner says his team will set up in a 5-3 alignment. They plan on being more aggressive this season attacking rather than reacting.
The Rams have 13 starters returning and only two or three players will have to go both ways. CMVT is back to a 10 game schedule(they played only 9 last season because Pius X closed) adding Saint Joseph’s Academy from State College.
